I first discovered healing in my early thirties. I soon got involved a very powerful deep breathing technique called rebirthing breathing, leading me through states of deep catharsis and ecstatic love. I started to go to holistic camps and workshops, where I discovered I had an aptitude towards healing and sensing energies. I learned to dowse. I started to use crystals with radionic and electro-gem therapy devices. Since then I’ve regularly partaken in in many self-improvement and healing courses and workshops.

I used to work in the home improvements trade, just doing occasional healings for friends as a hobby. A need for life change brought me from the south-east to Totnes in 2004. For many years I’ve fancied working professionally as a therapist, and living here has encouraged me. In 2009 I suddenly decided to start with the Upledger Institute craniosacral training after seeing a leaflet at a friends.

Receiving craniosacral treatments over the years had given me no idea of the amazing adventure of giving craniosacral therapy. I feel I can work with clients on deeper, fuller and with more historic issues than with my other therapies. For this I feel gratitude.

The Therapy

Where massage works to release tension and miss-alignment in the muscles, and osteopathy and chiropractics; in the bone structure, craniosacral therapy works to release tension in the fascia: the body’s connective tissue.

Fascia is the ‘glue’ that holds all muscles, bones, ligaments, organs and skin together, and supports the nerve, blood and lymph vessels travelling between these. The fascia sheaths all our bundles of muscle tissue, and is said to contain the meridians within the body.

The ability of this connective tissue to allow us both the flexibility to become, say an athlete, and the protection needed to allow us to survive say a serious accident, is truly amazing.

Over our lives, injury, illness, and our physical and emotional enviroment can leave tension and distortions in our fascia. Upledger Craniosacral Therapy training teaches how to feel for these impactions, and methods designed to ease them and bring the bodies awareness into those areas in a way that triggers the bodies natural self healing and integration processes. The fascia is thixotropic: under hard or fast movement it resists and is inflexible, but under very slow and gentle touch, as in most of the treatment, it can become flexible, with the potential to allow releases. The aim of releasing these impactions is to improve structural integrity, both of the whole and individual organs, and create better health of the organs through unimpared supply by the surrounding nerves, blood vessels and meridians.

Special attention is placed on central nervous system (CNS): the brain and the spinal cord: the most delicate part of our anatomy. Although some distortions in the CNS may be caused locally, necessitating working on the head and spine alone, many, because of the inherent interconnectedness of the the fascial system, may be referred from other parts of the body that need releasing.

Through clinical experience it also appears both physical and emotional traumas can leave specific distortions in the fascia, areas where the energy flow may be reduced, and the nerves may missfire. Part of our training called Somatoemotional release aims to help the body to release these.

The Session

We start with a discussion of your needs, the therapy and any questions you have, We then proceed to the couch. The therapy is done fully clothed (women, it is easier for me to work if you wear trousers or leggings). I start with several gentle holds to evaluate your body, and the treatment consists mainly of very light holds on the body, head and spine. Occasionally I may use deeper pressure, hold a limb in a certain position, or discuss what is going on for you. At the end of the session I will re-evaluate the body, and may finish with a few minutes of energy work.

The most common experience for my clients is of deep relaxation. They’ve also reported seeing colours, experiencing emotional or physical pains coming and going, and feeling energy or bliss.

With time to talk before and after, the session will last 1 to 2 hours.

At the end of the session one is usually left feeling very relaxed (and surprised at how much time has passed). I would suggest a short break before working heavy machinery or doing any significant driving.
