About Marguerite Wallis
My private practice was established 17 years ago and is conveniently located 3 miles from central Oxford with free parking available. The clinic is situated in the small forest garden behind our house. As well as working from my clinic, I am able to offer home and workplace visits in the OX4 region and occasionally elsewhere by negotiation.
I am an experienced physiotherapist and unique in that I have integrated the healing arts into mainstream, evidence-based physiotherapy. I feel this is a more balanced approach, recognising the value of intuition as well as knowledge. I treat a wide range of physical complaints including those that have an emotional or spiritual cause. I also have a mindfulness-based approach to my work which is particularly helpful for treating chronic pain and chronic ill health. When we are fully present in the body we can experience our fundamental wholeness, our sense of wonder and aliveness. Our suffering can begin to melt in the glow of a kind and accepting awareness.
My intention is to use my skills to relieve pain, suffering and dysfunction and to explore the experience of the inner body as well as the outer body. I aim to keep sessions affordable, to provide an excellent service and make my clinic as environmentally friendly as possible.

Craniosacral therapy in Oxford
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle hands-on treatment that is suitable for all ages and can treat many conditions. I offer this therapy as a stand-alone treatment and also in conjunction with physiotherapy, somato-emotional release, viscerofascial manipulations and healing. The combination of therapies depends on each individual. You can be treated fully clothed and the assessment is part of the treatment. This therapy works on the free flow of cerebro-spinal fluid around the brain and spinal cord which is like working on the interface between spirit and matter. Some clients describe this as smoothing out the aura or as a deeply relaxing or powerful experience. Others feel a sense of being centred and aligned. Many aches, pains and stresses just melt away with this therapy and you can feel re-balanced, re-energized and harmonized. Some tiredness can be expected after the treatment as the body re-integrates and restores itself.
Somato-emotional release work is a way to become conscious of the "issues in the tissues". Traumas are often stored in the body and this therapy enables them to be cradled in a loving awareness which often leads to a release or a softening of their hold on us. Our neural circuits can gradually be re-wired.
Viscero-fascial manipulations work on the organs inside the body from outside the body. The gentle, sometimes firm manipulations of the tissues can soften adhesions, and improve the circulation, nerve conduction and mobility of the organs enabling them to move freely in relation to each other. This therapy is particularly helpful for digestive and gynaecological disorders and breathing problems that may manifest elsewhere in the body. For example backpain may be linked to digestive disorders.
I can offer the following treatments:- Craniosacral therapy, which is helpful for many states and conditions, some of which are difficult to diagnose, including chronic pain and ill health, headaches and migraines, conception difficulties, pregnancy and rheumatoid arthritis.
- Viscero-fascial manipulations, which are especially helpful for IBS, menstual pains, acid reflux, etc.
- Somato-emotional release work, which helps to soften and release trauma held in the body.
- Mindfulness meditations, individually or as a group. I lead a monthly mindfulness drop in group as well as the 8-week Breathworks courses.
- Chakra based healing work.
Mindfulness for Health Courses and Groups in Oxford
Breathworks Mindfulness for Health courses help with learning about suffering and the different ways we suffer. For instance primary suffering is the actual unpleasant sensations we feel, wheras secondary suffering is our resistance to the primary suffering. This can take the form of tensing our muscles against the pain, hardening against our experience or numbing out, breathing shallowly, excessive use of pain medications or alcohol, frustration, anger, endless problem solving, being overly busy or isolating yourself and withdrawing. Mindfulness helps with secondary suffering and often the primary suffering too as they are intimately woven together in our minds. It can actually be our thoughts of pain rather than the actual sensations of pain that are so stressful and drive us crazy. Mindfulness helps to reduce fear by bringing our suffering into a loving, compassionate and non-judgemental embrace. We learn to gently inhabit our body again which can often feel like an enemy when it is wracked with pain. Our body responds to kindness, acceptance and gratitude. We learn the body scan, breathing anchor meditations, compassionate acceptance, open heart meditation and connection meditations to name a few, and we learn to find balance in our lives through pacing and to find equanimity by responding rather than reacting. Meditative movements are also a part of the course as physical fitness often deteriorates with chronic pain.
