My Journey
My journey towards becoming a homeopath began in 1991 when my daughter was very little. After 3 winters of prolonged coughs she was diagnosed with childhood asthma. Our doctor prescribed 2 inhalers for her and we were quite unhappy when this seemed the only solution. We had tried Chinese medicine and daily massage with oils but these had not really helped. Her coughs would invariably go on for 6 weeks or more. Trying homeopathy was a last resort for us and I had no idea whether it would help.
The homeopath collected a lot of information from us regarding the pregnancy and birth, our family medical history, my daughter's personality and about what the coughs were actually like (loose, phlegmy and worse at night if I remember correctly!). She prescribed a homeopathic remedy called Pulsatilla which I gave my daughter daily over the next week. Her cough cleared up within days! At the second consultation the homeopath explained to me that this remedy was probably her 'constitutional remedy' and would be good for boosting her general health if given in early Autumn and Spring when she seemed to be most susceptible to coughs. She also gave her a series of remedies over the following few months to help reduce the influence of the inherited tendency towards asthma and other allergic conditions which both I and my partner carried.
I was so grateful for having homeopathic remedies over the course of the following few years - my daughter's asthma attacks became less severe and less frequent and were always helped by remedies. Her general health improved greatly and she never needed to use the inhalers!
Gradually, I began to study Homeopathic First Aid, preferring to use natural remedies for all sorts of household ailments, accidents etc. Since then I have had 2 more children whose infrequent colds I nip in the bud with the appropriate remedy so that neither of them (age 7 and 4) have ever been to the doctor or missed a day off school through illness! It is a blessing to have found a way of improving the immunity of my children with a system of medicine that works with their own in-built wisdom and healing powers, thereby helping them to be full of vitality as children should be.
In 1997 I qualified as a Counsellor, a job which I thoroughly enjoyed. Over the next few years, as my knowledge of Homeopathy increased I began to think more and more of remedies that could be effective for emotional issues such as anxiety, lack of confidence, deeply held resentments etc. Soon it became clear to me that my skills in listening with natural empathy, analysis (I am quite scientifically-minded!) and my keen interest in health would best be served by training as a Homeopath.
At the Centre for Homeopathic Education where I studied for 4 years I was trained in the practical approach to homeopathic prescribing by some of the best Homeopaths in the UK.
Working as a Homeopath feels like a vocation to me, not just a job. I love the fact that each case is a journey of inquiry and discovery for both me and the patient. Because each person is an individual, blanket prescriptions can only touch the surface of their dis-ease (and will usually only supress it!).
Most of all I love the outcomes. In the majority of cases people find that their symptoms are greatly helped by homeopathy. Some experience this as a gradual process and others notice a profound change within days of taking a remedy.
I continue to learn daily from the cases that I treat. I also have a strong commitment towards continued professional development. During the past year I have undergone further training in the Homeopathic treatment of Infertility, Breast Health, Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Grief.
I am currently training to become a Breastfeeding Supporter with the Breastfeeding Network.
