Meirion Ellis is an experienced qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist (Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy, Diploma in Clinical and Advanced Hypnotherapy, Hypnotherapy Practitioners Diploma) and a Certificated Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). He is also a practitioner of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) which is a popular form of Meridian Therapy (Tapping), and find that this fits in very well with Hypnotherapy and NLP.
He is a member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), one of the major professional bodies for Hypnotherapy in the UK. Belonging to such organisations means that the Hypnotherapist has followed, and successfully completed, a high quality course in hypnotherapy to national occupational standards, and is bound by a professional code of conduct, ethics and practice.
He is also a member of the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), which was set up by the government to protect the public by providing a UK voluntary register of complementary therapists. The CNHC keeps a register of practitioners who meet national standards of practice in their work, and sets the standards that practitioners need to meet to get onto and then stay on the register. It also requires registered practitioners to keep to its Code of Conduct, Performance and Ethics. So always look for your guarantee of standards, the CNHC registered mark.
Meirion has had many years of experience helping clients to make the changes they desire. He specialises in regression therapy, hypertension, IBS, depression, anxiety and stress, pain control and deep rooted emotional issues, and I can of course help you with any of the other conditions listed on these pages.
Hypnotherapy
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of relaxation and heightened awareness induced by suggestion. It is a totally natural state which many of us experience every day without knowing. The word hypnosis is derived from the Greek word 'hypnos' meaning 'to sleep', but is actually far from being asleep. A person puts themselves into hypnosis and are actually only "guided" by the hypnotist.Whilst in this altered state of deep relaxation the unconscious mind becomes very receptive to what the hypnotherapist is saying.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy uses the state of hypnosis combined with powerful suggestions to bring about a therapeutic changes. It can be used to re-program certain behaviour patterns, release trauma and make changes for the better. It is a wonderfully natural and non-invasive way to treat an incredible number of emotional and nervous complaints.
More information on Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy ?
The first thing you should know about hypnosis is that it is a natural state that everyone has gone through many, many times before. Sometimes we enter the hypnotic state naturally, enjoy it for a while and then either fall asleep or come back to fully waking consciousness, often unaware that anything unusual has happened. On occasion, we do notice the shift in consciousness, but usually this realisation does not come until we are back to full conscious awareness. Have you ever driven or walked somewhere and suddenly realised that you are unsure of which route you took? It’s almost as though you are on autopilot, you know you were safe, yet your focus was elsewhere. This naturally occurring state is often cut short because of external events that require your conscious awareness, such as traffic lights or potentially hazardous circumstances. You also enter a trance state while day dreaming, again this is often cut short as work colleagues wave their hand in front of your face and call your name! These are just two examples of how we drift in and out of altered states of consciousness without direction, the difference between these experiences and hypnosis is that with hypnosis you control the state and make productive use of it.
During the hypnotic state something very special and rather unusual happens. The subject becomes increasingly suggestible and is able to gain access to the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind works very much like a computer processor, obeying the programs it receives without question, however, during normal waking consciousness, any program that you attempt to install will be checked, and if it conflicts with programs already running, it will be rejected. The hypnotic state allows you to reprogram your subconscious mind without scrutiny. This means that you are able to install new programs that conflict with your existing ones. When this happens people change. Changes at the subconscious level are usually very long lasting; an example of a negative program at this level would be a phobia or an addiction. The goal of hypnosis is to elicit positive change by removing undesirable programs and replacing them with helpful ones. This is only possible because hypnosis allows access to the subconscious, if it didn’t; hypnosis would be nothing more than relaxation. There have been many attempts to explain what makes this communication possible and experimentation has revealed a number of ways that we are able to program our subconscious, the most notable of which are repetition, relaxation, focus, shock and confusion.
Hypnosis helping before medical and dental procedures
Hypnosis can be extremely beneficial before dental and medical procedures to help the patient relax and help alleviate any fears and phobias that may be present. It can also be used to reduce or remove pain and help with recovery after any procedure. Hypnosis has also been used successfully in place of anaesthesia during various medical and dental procedures.
Frequently asked questions
Will I remember what has happened ?
Yes, most people are surprised to find that they remember everything that happens during hypnotherapy. You are not asleep on unconscious, you will know everything that is going on around you.
Can I get "stuck" in hypnosis ?
No, it is impossible to get "stuck" in hypnosis as it is a completely natural state. If something happened to the therapist while you were in hypnosis you would naturally drift out of hypnosis on your own.
Can I speak whilst in hypnosis ?
Yes and with some treatments you will be encouraged to do so.
How many visits will I need ?
This can vary so much depending on the problem and how well you respond to hypnotherapy. It can be anything from two to three sessions for stopping smoking and weight loss to five or six sessions for more deep rooted problems.
Can I be influenced to do anything against my will ?
No, you are in control at all times and cannot be made to do anything against your will. Stage hypnotism has given hypnotherapy a bad name in this light, and you can only be "made to do" what you want to do. If you were asked to do something you did not want to, you would either just not do it or come straight out of hypnosis.
How will I feel afterwards ?
You will feel very calm and relaxed after hypnosis. Some people even question if they have been in hypnosis as they "experienced" everything and had a pre-conception that they should be "unconscious" whilst under hypnosis, which of course is not the case.
NLP
Neuro Linguistic Programming - NLP
NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is the study of self communication. How we communicate with ourselves through our beliefs, values and expectations will greatly influence our outcomes. The name NLP was coined by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. Their work evolved from their study of expert communicators such as Milton Erickson, Virginia Satire and Fritz Perls. What Bandler and Grinder discovered through a method they called "modeling" was that if any person could achieve a result, then other people could be taught to do the same thing, by following the same basic actions, including thought patterns of the person they were modeling. Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a method of programming the mind, emphasizing the mind-body-spirit connection.
The term `neuro-linguistic programming’ is designed to embrace three ideas:
- all behaviour starts from the neurological processes;
- we use language to organize our thinking and to communicate with others;
- we can choose to `programme’ our behaviour to achieve the results we desire;
The NLP practitioner’s goal is to change a person’s state and “re-program” that person’s beliefs about themselves. By detecting automatic body changes such as skin color changes, muscle tension, and eye movements, as well as other physiological responses, the NLP practitioner attempts to discern how a client perceives and relates to identity, personal beliefs, and life goal issues. NLP can help people to replace false or negative perceptions, with positive, life affirming beliefs..
More about NLP ....
As a therapeutic tool, NLP has been highly successful, showing amazing results. The reasons behind these results is relatively straightforward: We were born with the most amazing computer in the universe - the human brain. Unfortunately, nobody gave us an instruction manual on how to work it and this is where NLP can help. NLP helps to show you how to run your brain, how to control how you feel, how to be a more effective human being, how to improve your communication skills and how your mind influences your health. Sometimes you may feel unable to control your feelings, this all changes once you know how your mind works NLP puts you back in control. If you are held back by events from your past, NLP has some very effective ways of releasing you - such as the 'rewind' technique for dealing with phobias and post traumatic stress disorder.
NLP is used extensively in business and sport to improve effectiveness. If you know the programmes you are running in your mind when you perform at your best, you can duplicate these on a regular basis and obtain significant improvements. So whether it's to increase your motivation, improve your performance at work, setting and achieving goals, improving your performance at sports, or public speaking skills - NLP can help you become more successful. Generally, the more successful your communication skills, the happier and more effective you are in all areas of your life. NLP can enhance the influence you have on your family, colleagues at work or your partner. NLP can help you to develop a rapport with others in a matter of seconds, and help you become aware of how people respond to what they see, hear, feel and the words you use. NLP recognises that the mind and body are connected, and it can be used to great effect to allow you to influence your own health and so reduce the stress in your life..
EFT
Emotional Freedom Technique - EFT
The Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, is the psychological acupressure technique I routinely use in my practice and most highly recommend to optimize your emotional health. Although it is still often overlooked, emotional health is absolutely essential to your physical health and healing - no matter how devoted you are to the proper diet and lifestyle, you will not achieve your body's ideal healing and preventative powers if emotional barriers stand in your way. EFT is very easy to learn, and will help you: Remove Negative Emotions Reduce Food Cravings Reduce or Eliminate Pain Implement Positive Goals EFT is a form of psychological acupressure, based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments for over five thousand years, but without the invasiveness of needles. Instead, simple tapping with the fingertips is used to input kinetic energy onto specific meridians on the head and chest while you think about your specific problem - whether it is a traumatic event, an addiction, pain, etc. -- and voice positive affirmations. This combination of tapping the energy meridians and voicing positive affirmation works to clear the "short-circuit" - the emotional block -- from your body's bio-energy system, thus restoring your mind and body's balance, which is essential for optimal health and the healing of physical disease..
EFT - How it started ....
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) evolved from Thought Field Therapy, which was created by US clinical psychologist Roger Callahan. Callahan discovered that stimulating acupressure / energy points lead to psychological relief for an anxious client, and through experimentation was able to discover a series of useful points. Gary Craig, who studied with Callahan, identified a comprehensive set of "all purpose" energy points that could be applied to treat any emotional problem. He called this Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), and achieved excellent results with this approach on a wide range of emotional as well as physical problems. EFT has been successfully applied to treat a wide range of emotional problems and issues, including anxiety, fears, phobias, trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, grief, anger, guilt, etc. It has also been applied to enhance performance and improve relationships. In relationships, EFT can help us by reducing the emotional upsets towards our partner, many of which have their origins in our past. Using EFT, couples can overcome many of the barriers to friendship and closeness. Perhaps the most exciting thing about EFT is that anyone can learn this approach and use it to help themselves. While some problems require persistence with the technique over a period of time, and some will require the intervention of a skilled therapist, many ordinary people can learn EFT and apply it successfully to the general problems and stresses of living.
Treatment
Treatment - taking the first step ....
The first step for most people is a confidential, no obligation chat on the telephone. Here we will discuss your individual situation and decide between us what course of action can be taken. If you prefer, this initial consultation can also be conducted by email. The number of sessions required will vary depending on what is being treated. For example, stopping smoking may be done in one session of around one and a half hours, weight loss may require two or three one hour sessions, where more deep rooted problems may require five or six sessions.
We do offer a free initial consultation (up to 30 minutes) at the Oswestry Clinic. We are unable to offer this service at Chester and Wrexham, but the options of further telephone consultations, email or Skype are available if required. If you have any questions about any of the treatments listed here and how they could help you, please call us or send an email if you prefer.
The first session ....
The first session is very important, most people will feel something between being a little anxious to feeling very nervous. The main reason for these feelings is the "fear of the unknown" if you have not experienced hypnosis previously. Also it will usually be the first time we meet, so there will be some nerves around that event. We will spend the first 30 minutes or so chatting, I will be asking questions to build up a picture, and work out the best way to progress with treatment. I will also explain exactly what we will be doing, also answering any questions you may have, putting you completely at ease about the whole process. After 30 minutes you will feel much more comfortable and relaxed, also understanding more about what we are going to do to make those changes. The second half of the session is then spent doing hypnosis for the first time, and doing any work that is needed to be done at this time. At the end of your first session, you will feel very relaxed and comfortable, looking forward to your next experience of hypnotherapy.
The cost of making changes ....
Unfortunately as with anything that is worth having there is a cost involved, and we have tried to make this payment section as easy to understand and pain free as possible.
Initial consultations are FREE and are done by email and over the phone or by Skype. At the Oswestry clinic we do offer a free, no -obligation initial consultation (up to 30 minutes).
During this initial meeting, we get a chance to answer any questions you may have and explain about the process we would be using together. We also get the chance to find out a little about you and what you would like to achieve from our work together.
Regular therapy sessions last for approximately 1 hour and the cost for each session is £55.
When two or more sessions are booked and paid for in advance, there is a lesser rate of £50 per session. For example, 2 sessions £100, 3 sessions £150, etc.
Smoking Cessation costs £110, and depending on the outcome of our initial chat, can be two sessions or one longer session.
Concessions are available for students, pensioners and those on benefits. Please ask for more information.
Cancellations - It is inevitable that life sometimes gets in the way and appointments have to be cancelled. Cancellations more than 24hrs before the appointment will not incur any charges. Unfortunately due to room booking costs, and the fact that it is not always possible to fill appointment slots at short notice, any cancellations nearer to the appointment time than 24 hrs will incur a charge of £15.
