Preparation and Support for the Newborn Days
SERVICES My name is Mel Kelly and I am a Postnatal Doula, BabyNatal teacher and Baby Massage teacher based in Pembrokeshire. I can help you prepare for, and support you during, the newborn days.
- Preparation - As the BabyNatal teacher for Pembrokeshire I offer classes for parents-to-be to help you prepare for life with your new baby.
- Support - As a Postnatal Doula I offer practical and emotional support for you and your family, in your own home, in the weeks after the birth of your baby.
- Bonding - As a Developmental Baby Massage teacher I am passionate about the importance of "touch" to babies and believe it is an essential, wonderful and simple way of bonding with our babies - for mums, dads, siblings, grandparents etc etc! I am happy to show you some techniques as part of my doula support or please contact me if you would like me to teach a class.
Postnatal Doula Support
My aim is to provide a gentle, supportive presence in your home allowing you the space and time to adjust to life with your new baby.
The support required differs from one family to another and we would agree between us beforehand what you would like me to do, but the following are some examples:
•A chance to talk through the birth
•Occupying siblings whilst mum and baby have bonding time
•Giving mum some "me-time" to shower, have a relaxing bath, nap, or spend time with older siblings or partner whilst I look after the baby
•Light housework - hoovering, tidying up, laundry, dusting, washing-up
•Practical guidance on caring for a newborn - calming techniques, bathing, nappy changing etc
•Companionship - someone to chat with and share any concerns
•Accompanying mum and baby to appointments
•Running errands
•Showing you some Developmental Baby Massage techniques as a way of easing colic, sleeplessness, fussiness etc in your baby and helping you and your family bond with the new baby
•Information on local support groups
•Support and reassurance for your partner - they are going through a life changing experience too!
Each visit lasts a minimum of 2 hours. I will support you for at least 20 hours overall, for a period of between 4-6 weeks, and will try to be as flexible as possible in how these hours are spread out, in order to benefit you the most. You may choose to hire me when your baby is a couple of days old, or a couple of weeks and you may want me for more hours in the first few weeks and less as time goes by.
I live just outside Narberth in Pembrokeshire and can cover the whole of the county and over the borders into Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion.
Ideally we would meet before the baby is born but if you have already had your baby and would like support please contact me and I will do my best to help.
QUALIFICATION DETAILS I attended the Doula UK accredited Birth and Postnatal Doula course run by Nurturing Birth. I have decided to focus on being a Postnatal Doula as it was during my own early days as a new mum that I would have particularly appreciated some special doula support - this was despite a very supportive family.
To complement the postnatal support I provide I qualified as a teacher of Developmental Baby Massage in July 2011, having trained in London with the inspirational Peter Walker at the International School of Developmental Baby Massage and Movement.
In April 2012 I attended training to become a BabyNatal teacher and provide classes and workshops for parents-to-be.
I am a registered member of Doula UK working to their code of conduct, I have comprehensive insurance and have had an enhanced level criminal records check.
