Gwen brings ‘gentle touch’ technique to Rosemount
Experienced holistic therapy practitioner Gwen Wilks has joined the team at
Rosemount Osteopathy, bringing expertise in a unique treatment known as the Bowen Technique.
Gwen, who has returned to Aberdeen after living and working in the South of England for many years, says she is very excited about introducing the Bowen Technique to the Rosemount area, as she has hands-on’ experience of the amazing benefits it can bring to people suffering a range of ailments, from back pain, frozen shoulder and sports injuries, to asthma and sinusitis.
“I’ve been practising different types of remedial therapy for the past 10 years but I have to say my favourite is the Bowen Technique. It’s such a simple and gentle procedure, yet it achieves remarkable results,” she says.
Gwen, a fully qualified practitioner and a fellow of the International Council of Holistic Therapists, explains that the technique is not a form of massage, but involves very light rolling movements with the thumbs and fingers over muscles and tendons on specific points on the body. The gentle actions aim to relieve tension and pain and activate the natural healing process. This beneficial treatment takes up to an hour, costs £30 per session, and can usually be carried out through light clothing. Gwen says often two or three treatments at weekly intervals are enough to ensure long-lasting relief from symptoms.
The Bowen Technique is suitable for babies, children and adults of all ages and as it promotes feelings of well-being, increased energy and improved sleep patterns, it can also be used to manage stress or simply as a ‘feel-good’ therapy.
Gwen is based at Rosemount Osteopathy on Thursdays (4-8pm), at Riverside Chiropractic Clinic on Wednesdays (4-8pm) and Fridays
(10-1pm), and at Chelsea House Clinic, Peterculter, on Tuesdays
(4.30-8.30pm) and Saturdays (9.30-1.30pm), where she also practices Reflexology, Aromatherapy Massage, Swedish Massage, Indian Head Massage, Reiki and Ear candling. Prices range from £18 to £50 depending on the treatment.
Any one of these therapeutic treatments makes a welcome gift and vouchers are available to buy at the clinics.

NATURAL THERAPIES

AROMATHERAPY
Aromatherapy is an ancient natural healing art that uses essential oils to enhance well-being, relieve stress and promote vitality and good health.
Essential oils are highly concentrated substances extracted from various parts of aromatic plants and trees which have undeniable therapeutic properties when absorbed through the skin or via the respiratory system.
The administration of oils by massage, compress, inhalation, vapourisation and in the bath can relieve a broad spectrum of conditions and ailments of every system of the body including the skin.
REFLEXOLOGY
Reflexology is both an art and a science with its roots in pressure therapy, practised by a variety of cultures throughout history as a preventative and therapeutic medicine.
More recent research and development have established that the reflexes of the hands and feet relate to every organ and part of the body. This, combined with the centuries old knowledge that a natural healing energy circulates in specific pathways, zones or meridians throughout the body, is the basis for modern day Reflexology.
This treatment centres on applying deep gentle pressure techniques over the complex nerve-ending network of the hands or feet in order to relieve energy flow blockages and to activate the natural healing powers of the body.
REIKI
Reiki is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy (Rei = universal, Ki = life energy). It is the vital life energy which flows through all living things and which can be activated for the purpose of healing.
Pronounced Ray-key, this is a very simple, non- invasive and extremely powerful healing discipline that originated in the Buddhist culture, but it is not a faith system. All that is necessary is the desire and willingness to be healed.
The energy is channelled through the therapist and goes right to the source of the unbalance and not just to the manifesting symptoms. Treatment is usually done with the recipient lying down, fully clothed, on a therapy couch but it can also be given in a sitting position if this is more comfortable, and involves various hand positions covering most of the body. There is no pressure, manipulation or massage making Reiki an ideal treatment for the very young, the elderly, those recovering from surgery and pregnant women.
SWEDISH MASSAGE
The medicinal use of massage dates back at least 5,000 years to systems used by the Chinese, Japanese, Hindus and the ancient Egyptians. Galen, a noted first century Roman physician wrote: “Massage eliminates the waste products of nutrition and the poisons of fatigue”.
Developed in the early 19th century by a Swedish physiotherapist named Ling, Swedish massage may be defined as the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, performed with the hands for therapeutic purposes.
Swedish massage is a series of stimulating, invigorating, soothing and relaxing movements that have many physiological, physical and psychological benefits.
INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE
This form of massage, which is administered while the recipient is seated and clothed, has its origins in India where, in certain areas, it is an integral part of family and social life.
Massage of the upper back and arms, shoulders, neck and scalp is followed by either a stimulating or relaxing facial massage which combine to relieve stress, induce relaxation and improve lymphatic drainage, scalp circulation, muscle tone, hair condition and can also bring about a psychological uplift.
HOPI EAR CANDLES
Hopi ear candles are handmade by a South American group of Red Indians from a traditional recipe of honey extracts, sage, St John’s wort, chamomile and other secret herbs all wrapped in a natural linen fabric.
A candle is placed in one ear at a time where the revitalizing heat soothes, relieves and relaxes. This treatment is indicated in cases of irritation in the ears or sinuses, noises, e.g. ringing in the ears, headache, migraine, sinusitis and rhinitis, over-irritability and stress related disorders.
Following a short rest the treatment is completed with a massage of the ears and surrounding areas to intensify the stimulation of energy flow achieved by the candles.
About Natural Therapies...
The important thing to remember about natural therapies and healing is that they are not just for when you are ill. They help you live your life at your own highest level, restoring control, balance and harmony in a holistic way. Holistic can be defined as treating the person as a whole on physical, mental and emotional levels.
Whether you have a specific problem and want to receive treatment on a regular basis or you just want to pamper yourself occasionally, you will benefit by experiencing the feeling of well being created by natural therapy.
Most therapies are non-invasive and when full body massage is being performed only a small area is worked on at one time ensuring that the rest of the body is covered, so there is no need for concern.
About Consultations...
The first appointment will begin with a consultation which involves giving details on medical history, current medication, lifestyle, diet, exercise, known stresses, etc. and, based on the information received, I will decide on the best course of action to be taken. In some cases this may mean referring to your GP for approval prior to any treatment being given.
The information received during the initial consultation will be updated on an on-going basis to ensure that any necessary adjustments to treatment are made.
Client confidentiality is assured at all times.
THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE
European College of Bowen Studies
"QUITE SIMPLY ONE OF THE MOST STRAIGHTFORWARD AND EFFECTIVE 'HANDS ON' THERAPIES AVAILABLE"
“Whenever I’ve had any back or neck problems, the Bowen Technique has always successfully put an end to them as well as aligning my body and increasing my energy. I can’t recommend it highly enough.”
-Jerome Flynn, actor
THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE IS A GENTLE, SUBTLE AND RELAXING HANDS-ON TREATMENT
Who can it help?
The practitioner uses thumbs or fingers to make a series of precise, rolling-type moves over muscle. During the treatment there are a series of short breaks where the patient is left resting to allow their body to respond to the gentle moves that have been performed. This rest period is an important part of the treatment and gives the body time to make the subtle and fine adjustments, which help to re-balance, relieve tension and reduce pain. It is these features which make the Bowen Technique unique.
All who practise the Bowen Technique are continually amazed at the effectiveness of this simple and gentle hands-on therapy
What does a treatment involve?
An appointment will take approximately 45 - 60 minutes and most of the work can be performed through light clothing (or directly on skin). Four to five treatments, at weekly intervals are often sufficient to achieve lasting relief, although further treatments may be required. To receive maximum benefit it is recommended that other physical therapies are not mixed with the Bowen Technique for example, reflexology, massage, physiotherapy.
THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE TREATS THE WHOLE PERSON, NOT JUST THE CONDITION
What does it treat?
The Bowen Technique aims to balance the whole person, not just the symptoms. Common presentations include back and neck pain, knee problems, sports injuries, RSI, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and respiratory problems, to name but a few. Practically any problem can potentially be addressed and some people use the Bowen Technique as a means of stress management and health maintenance, seeing their therapist regularly 2-4 times a year.
Bowen Throughout Life
Case Histories
ANXIETY, POOR CONCENTRATION
girl, aged 9 - 5 treatments
A. came with her mother complaining of feeling anxious about school, having nightmares, difficulty concentrating and making odd repetitive movements. Sessions one and two produced considerable improvement in general anxiety and behaviour. By session three she was much happier, more relaxed and able to get on with schoolwork much faster and with greater concentration. After five sessions, all odd arm movements had stopped; she was sleeping well and rarely having bad dreams.
MIGRAINES
girl, aged 15 - 3 treatments
Teenager D. was suffering from 3-4 migraines a week, usually waking in the morning feeling sick and unable to get out of bed until the attack had run its course. After only one treatment she had considerable improvement and after three she had no more migraines. This improvement has held, and though she very occasionally has an aura’, she has not had another headache in the 18 months since treatment.
FROZEN SHOULDER
woman, aged 29 - 4 treatments
“As conventional medicine was struggling to alleviate the restriction and pain, I was advised by a rheumatologist to seek alternative help. I tried several other therapies but nothing helped. Recently I tried the Bowen Technique and after four sessions I was amazed to feel the pain and restriction fade. Now I have Bowen once every few months to keep up the health benefits.”
ACHIILLES TENDON INFLAMMATION
man, aged 32 - regular treatments
“I recently changed my running shoes and began to notice an uncomfortable strain down my left Achilles. On finishing each run the area would burn and be painful for some hours. This developed until running became impossible without pain. My Bowen practitioner suggested that the problem could be coming from the sacroiliac joint in the lower back. Three Bowen treatments gave permanent relief. I now see the practitioner when I am preparing for a big race.”
SCIATICA
Man aged 40 - 1 treatments
P. was unable to put weight on his right foot and was in severe pain from the buttock right down the leg. He was extremely tense. The therapist gave him one treatment, observing his body relax during the 40 minutes of treatment. He was virtually pain free when he got up and was walking normally.
FRAILTY AND RESTRICTED ARM
woman, aged 83 - ongoing treatments
Mrs R. has arthritis and in recent years has relied on a walking stick at all times. A mastectomy 29 years ago left her unable to straighten her left arm or raise it above her shoulder. After her first Bowen treatment, she was able to raise her left arm above her head and straighten her elbow completely. After a night of intermittent cramps, her legs were feeling much freer and less stiff; so much so that when she went out to feed the ducks she didn’t need to use her stick. After her second Bowen treatment, she felt altogether steadier on her feet and her arthritic fingers were more mobile. She is now using stairs instead of the lift and her head, which she had described as muzzy, has cleared. Mrs R’s overall improvement is quite marked and with regular Bowen, she no longer thinks of herself as elderly and frail.
