What does it involve?
Self-Expression
A safe and confidential space is paramount for free self-expression. At the beginning of each session, time is given to each individual to be seen and/or heard through body and/or voice, allowing any suppressed emotions that may have a negative impact on their well-being to be expressed. In group work this can often prompt a response from a fellow group member, enabling both parties to feel accepted, heard, and not alone in their current mind set.
Body Mind Connection
DMP often includes a vast range of movement interventions providing an individual with a gentle opening to reconnect with the body. This connection may awaken experiences that are stored within the body (Rothschild,B:2000) and thus commence the psychophysiological journey into healing.

Hannah qualified as a Supervisor in 2016 and is now able to offer Creative Clinical Supervision as a part of her practise, introducing creative techniques to support the process.
Dance Movement Psychotherapy
Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP) is a therapeutic tool that uses Dance and Movement to express the self on a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level by communicating the conscious and sub-conscious mind through a non-verbal approach.
‘…. A person can engage creatively in a process to further their emotional, cognitive, physical and social integration. It is founded on the principle that movement reflects an individual’s patterns of thinking and feeling.' (ADMPUK, 2003)
DMP aims to improve an individual’s body-mind relationship and sense of self through the therapeutic process and provides an outlet for any thoughts or feelings that words may not be able to convey. This can result in emotional and psychological benefits that may assist personal, social and emotional development.
What does it involve?
New Friendships
Social interaction is a product of group work and can often allow for new relationships to grow. These bonds can become a support network and may provide a sense of security for an individual who feels isolated or alone in their current state of being.
These connections can increase levels of;
- Self-worth
- Acceptance
- Confidence
- Sense of Belonging
- Sense of purpose
‘“The experience of being in a group of people who suffer from the same problem (universality) is also likely to be very comforting.” (Irvin, D. & Yalom, M.L.2005:110)
Creativity
The process can formulate through movement however the inclusion of music and prop is often accessed to assist and enhance the experience; brightly coloured scarves, Sensory Balls, or hoops; supporting interactions and creative play. Props can also encourage participants to comfortably engage in the process without feeling exposed, due to the natural boundary they build.
Alternative Arts Therapies are also accessible, with song and drawing often present.
Choice
The Core Conditions of Carl Rogers Person-Centred approach (1951) underpins Hannah’s practise, allowing an individual to guide the process to accommodate their momentary needs. The concept of Choice plays a prominent role, inviting participants to choose an intervention or even just a topic of conversation. This opportunity can give an individual a sense of purpose as well as rediscover the autonomous self and reconnect with their authenticity, promoting confidence, self-worth and empowerment.
