What is reflexology?
Reflexology is a non-invasive holistic therapy that works on the principle that different points of the feet correspond to the major organs, glands and systems of the body
Through using massage and pressure on various points/ areas of your feet reflexology aims to bring about a state of deep relaxation , stimulate the body's own healing processes and help a person to return to a state of balance and well-being.
The theory is that following illness, stress, injury or disease, the body is in a state of "imbalance", which blocks vital energy pathways preventing the body from functioning effectively. By clearing these blockages through reflexology, homeostasis (natural balance of the body) can be restored.
In reflexology the right foot represents the right side of the body and the left foot represents the left side, so your feet mirror your body and reflect your state of health.
What are the main benefits of reflexology?
Reflexology can help to reduce stress and induce deep relaxation
When stress isn't managed properly it compromises our immune system, making us susceptible to illness and disease. Much illness is stress related. Reflexology can become the powerful antidote to stress, neutralizing the affects of stress - the headaches, high blood pressure, colds, eye strain, indigestion, backaches and other minor ailments
Reflexology can help reduce stress by inducing a state of deep relaxation. It allows the nervous system to calm down and function more routinely. Circulation and blood flow is improved, and oxygen reaches the cells. When your reflexologist stimulates the 7000 nerves in your feet it encourages the clearing of neural pathways so that the body can return to its natural rhythms.
Reflexology can improve your circulation
Reflexology helps to improve blood circulation which helps to transport essential nutrients, oxygen and hormones through the body
Reflexology helps to balance the whole system
For your body to be healthy - all parts need to function properly and work together in unity. Excessive stress can knock some parts of your system out of balance. The theory is that reflexology helps the body to restore its balance naturally.
Will reflexology help me?
Reflexologists do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe. However, research and experience has shown that the specific techniques used in reflexology can be effective and beneficial in many ways. Reflexology may help with a wide range of conditions including:
- Stress and stress related conditions
- Boosting the immune system
- Boosting of energy and general well-being
- Pain relief
- Improving circulation
- Injury/recovery
- Encouraging the body to heal current disorders
- Clearing the body of toxins and waste products
- Rebalancing the body
- Anxiety and depression
- Hormonal imbalances
- Pre-conceptual, pregnancy & postnatal care (specialist area)
Reflexology aims to bring your body up to a peak state of functioning so it is able to heal itself.
What happens when I go for reflexology?
Your first visit to a reflexologist will involve a full consultation prior to your first treatment to ascertain your medical history and lifestyle – this will determine the best treatment plan to suit your needs. You will be asked to sign a consent form for treatment. This information will be kept confidential
Your reflexologist will then use their hands to apply pressure to the feet and lower leg. The application and the effect of the therapy is unique to each person.
A professionally trained reflexologist can detect subtle chances in specific points throughout the feet (reflex points) and by working on these points may affect the corresponding body system, gland or organ.
Your treatment will last around 50 minutes, please allow an extra 15 minutes for your first treatment for your consultation. A course of treatments may be recommended.
