My background is in Human Resources and I worked for a varied range of organisations. It was interesting, stimulating and demanding.
My earliest awareness of complementary health approaches was from my father, who regularly extolled the benefits to health of deep breathing. At home, I was always a very willing and popular giver of face, hand and foot massages. So – the breathing and touch – key elements of my later training and practice as a Shiatsu practitioner.
It was in seeking to look after myself to meet work challenges that I decided to explore complementary therapies and discovered Shiatsu. My first experience of Shiatsu left me feeling amazingly relaxed, revitalised and grounded. A colleague at work next day asked me if I was wearing a new dress! Shiatsu became an integral part of my life. I found that I became more body aware; more sensitive and responsive to subtle changes within myself and more conscious of the link of physical health with thoughts and feelings. Shiatsu has undoubtedly helped to see me through various times of challenge and significant change. I have never lost my sense of wonder about Shiatsu.
I found myself progressing from an introductory Shiatsu course to the full three years’ training with the Bristol School of Shiatsu. The emphasis of the training was on the development of intuitive touch within the framework of traditional oriental medicine theory as well as strong encouragement for self development. I had the privilege of being taught by inspirational individuals such as Keith Phillips, Frank Davis, Janet MacDonald, Suzanne Yates and Thea Bailey – with some of whom I have been able to do further postgraduate work, along with other teachers such as Nicola Pooley and George Dellar, Nick Pole and Cliff Andrews. I have now been a qualified practitioner for nearly 10 years’ now and I am a registered member of the The Shiatsu Society.
I am committed to continuing to learn and develop my professional practice. I aim to enable individuals to experience non intrusive intuitive touch specific to their individual needs, in a safe and tranquil space where they are able to relax and find a restorative calmness and sense of inner harmony to support them in their daily lives.
Recognising increasingly stressful working environments and the growing organisational awareness of the benefits of employee well being programmes, my colleague, Vena Bunker (Reflexology practitioner) and I decided to additionally train in On Site Seated Acupressure - an ideal workplace therapy. In order to offer the best possible service to organisations, we then chose to work collaboratively under the banner of In2BALANCE. This also gave us a further means of promoting our own individual therapies to a wider audience. We also added the wonderfully relaxing Japanese Face Massage to our individual repertoires.
I am now learning and practising Qi Gong which, as other practitioners have found, works well alongside Shiatsu. I love choral singing and working in my garden, and of course the company of my wonderful friends.
My practice is at home in Sneyd Park and at Neal's Yard Therapy Rooms, Clifton.
Shiatsu
Shiatsu literally means 'finger pressure'. It is a form of traditional Japanese bodywork based upon the traditions of Oriental medicine (which includes Acupuncture).
The underlying philosophy is that vital energy (Ki or Qi) flows through the body along pathways called meridians which connect with the vital organs of the body physically, mentally and emotionally. If this vital energy is not flowing freely, then signs or symptoms may emerge (eg stress, anxiety, fatigue, just not feeling quite right). Shiatsu aims to rebalance the flow of energy through non invasive and intuitive touch
Shiatsu offers a deeply relaxing experience, while being subtly dynamic in effect. Working with the integrated physical, mental and emotional elements of each individual, Shiatsu aims to promote a sense of inner harmony, wellbeing and the release of the individual's own self healing potential.
A variety of techniques may be used in Shiatsu to improve energy flow. These include gentle holding, gentle pressing of specific points across the body; pressing with palms, and where appropriate, more dynamic rotations and stretches.
You remain fully clothed during a Shiatsu treatment - comfortable, loose clothing (tracksuit bottoms and sweatshirt are ideal, and socks)- and no oils are used. Shiatsu treatments are normally carried out on the floor on a futon, but a chair or massage table can be used if necessary.
Japanese Face Massage – Tsuboki ®
Japanese Face Massage – Tsuboki ® - uses Anma and Acupressure techniques and works on the deep and superficial muscles of the face, helping to reduce the development of wrinkles and improve the appearance of the skin and to encourage the elimination of metabolic waste products. It is often described as a natural face lift.
The stimulation of acupressure points and meridians on the face will also help to restore a sense of balance to the whole body and to leave you feeling incredibly relaxed and revitalised.
Hopi Ear Candling
Hopi Ear Candling is an ancient therapy particularly associated with Native American Hopi Indians and in which special candles are used to treat the ears. The candles are made of natural ingredients – beeswax, honey extracts, sage, St John’s Wort, chamomile, beta carotene and organic woven cotton. They have soothing and relaxing properties and work on the chimney principle to draw out impurities form the ears and regulate the pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses. Treatments of both ears is followed by a gentle face massage.
