Alison Chapman “ We have the ability to develop towards our full potential ”
My Philosophy
I believe that we have the ability to develop towards our full potential but life experiences can result in this process becoming blocked. We may adapt ourselves to gain acceptance and become detached from our true self. An honest, empathic and non-judgemental counselling relationship can help you to accept yourself and find the inner resources to move forward.
Although we are shaped by our past I believe we have freedom, choice and responsibility for our life, therefore we can make choices about our present and future. Counselling can help you see your situation more clearly, make changes in your life or come to terms with difficult experiences.
How I Work
I am trained in the four main Counselling Approaches (Person-centred, Psychodynamic, Existential and Cognitive-Behavioural) which I integrate to create a therapy which is tailored to your needs.
I aim to create a therapeutic relationship based on trust. I am genuine, warm and empathic and will try to understand your experience from your point of view. I will accept you as you are, so you can feel safe to talk about your issues knowing that you won’t be judged or told what to do.
We will discuss what you hope to achieve in your counselling and we will have regular reviews to assess progress. The pace and content of sessions is decided by you and I will help you make sense of your thoughts and feelings so that you can make choices about what you can do to bring about changes in your life.
Personal and Professional Development
As a science graduate my first career was as a research scientist, but after a time I felt there was something missing. I became interested in all aspects of spirituality and trained as an SNU approved Spiritual Healer. In my healing work I noticed that people who are suffering with mental, physical or emotional problems felt better if they could talk about their worries and this prompted me to consider counselling as a career.
I believe that we possess a mind, body and spirit, and that the physical, mental, spiritual and emotional aspects of our being need to be in balance for optimum wellbeing. This understanding informs my counselling practice and I have a holistic approach to my work. My experience is that people are suffering from excessive stress from many sources and this has a detrimental effect on mental health and wellbeing. I have a special interest in meditation and mindfulness practice.

My Philosophy
We all have a unique experience of life and my aim is to help people overcome emotional difficulties, to encourage them to see things from a new perspective and to become aware of the choices they have in order to lead a more fulfilling life.
I believe that: - we are shaped by our past and environment;
- we have freedom of choice;
- we are responsible for our own lives;
- given the right support we can find meaning and happiness within our limitations.
How I Work
I will provide you with a warm, safe space to talk about anything you want. I will listen, respect your needs and respond in a way that acknowledges your feelings to help you explore options and alternatives. You will not be judged, analysed or told what to do and we will work out together how to move forward in a way suitable for you – one step at a time. Our therapeutic relationship will be based on honesty, acceptance and understanding.
I combine various aspects of therapeutic models (Existential, Transactional Analysis, Person-Centred, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) to provide a unique approach that is tailored to meet each clients needs. Techniques I use may be:
solution focussing ♦ goal setting ♦ stress management
relaxation techniques ♦ mindfulness meditation
I believe that with my flexible, integrative approach and without trying to fit you into a specific theoretical model I can help you to grow throughout therapy and beyond.
Personal and Professional Development
My life has been an exciting journey on many different paths to find my soul’s calling. I discovered Yoga and began to explore a more spiritual aspect of life. I was offered the role of Lifestyle Advisor and Yoga Teacher in a rehabilitation clinic, where I worked with people suffering from various addictions.
There I gradually developed a more therapeutic approach to my teaching, which eventually included experiential groups, expressive dance, mind-body work as well as other forms of therapy. I realised that I wanted to train professionally in this field and became a counsellor. It has been a challenging journey, but one that I feel very privileged to do. Apart from offering general counselling, I also integrate my knowledge of body work, spirituality and mindfulness into a more holistic therapy if the client wants to explore this aspect of life.
