REFLEXOLOGY
Reflexology is a natural holistic therapy based on the long established principle that there are energy zones that run throughout the body and reflex areas in the feet which correspond to all the major organs, glands and body parts. By having gentle, but firm pressure applied to these areas (known as reflex points), imbalances within the body may be detected and effectively treated to restore balance and harmony.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Reflexology may be used to help the body to relax and revive energy and to heal itself. It may also help to reduce stress and anxiety, enhance the working of the immune system and bring relief to a wide range of conditions, including- headaches
- sleep disorders
- breathing disorders
- sinus congestion
- fatigue
- joint pain
- back pain
- gallbladder problems
- sports injuries
- circulatory problems
- hormonal imbalances
- digestive disorders
- fertility issues
- tension and much more
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION?
The first session will be a little longer as I will need to complete a consultation form in respect of your health and lifestyle in order to ensure that reflexology will be of the utmost benefit. We can discuss any particular problems and I can answer any queries you may have regarding reflexology. A typical session lasts approximately one hour.
The procedure should make you feel relaxed and calm. You will be seated comfortably in a reclining chair and I will begin by relaxing your feet using massage techniques. Then I will work on the reflex points using firm, yet gentle movements to help release any blockages, thus allowing your natural energy to flow. This encourages the body to begin to heal itself.
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO HAVE A REFLEXOLOGY SESSION?
Even though one may make a difference, it is usually more effective to have a course of regular sessions. A plan can be discussed with you and reviewed as necessary. This will always be subject to your own preferences and can be changed at any time, according to progress.
SAFETY
Reflexology is a complementary therapy which, by the application of gentle but firm pressure to the reflex points, may be used with confidence alongside orthodox healthcare.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Due to the risk of cross infection, I am unable to give reflexology to anyone with open wounds or fungal infections on the nails or feet. Reflexology of the hands may be used as an alternative in these cases.
THE 'M' TECHNIQUE
The 'm’ technique was developed by Dr. Jane Buckle in 1994. It is a registered method of touch suitable for the very fragile or when massage is inappropriate. It is a series of stroking movements performed in a set sequence at a set pressure.
I use the ‘m’ technique on the hands and feet (or just the hands if appropriate). Therefore no clothing other than footwear needs to be removed.)
Touch is one of the most basic forms of communication, yet many of us are afraid to touch those who need it most and who maybe feeling ‘skin hungry’. The ‘m' technique evokes a rapid and profound relaxing effect.
The 'm’ technique was developed by Dr. Jane Buckle in 1994 and subsequent studies held have identified that the ‘m’ technique may have a measurable therapeutic effect on:- Fear, stress and anxiety
- Sleep disorders
- General well being
- Chronic pain and fatigue
- Headaches
This structure system of touch is suitable when massage is inappropriate because the person is critically ill or very fragile. The ‘m’ technique works on skin receptor sites that send signals to the brain. It has been described as 'physicaI hypnotherapy’.
The ‘m’ technique is very different from massage. In 1996 in ‘m’ technique was used in research carried out at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Centre, New York. The ‘m’ technique was applied to the feet of medical students and a measurable effect on their parasympathetic nervous systems was recorded using an 8 lead EKG machine attached to a heart variation monitor.
INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE
Indian Head Massage is based on an ancient Ayurvedic healing system, practised all over India for thousands of years. It is a deeply relaxing massage of the upper back, shoulders, arms, neck, face and scalp, which may help both physical and mental states. These are key areas of stress, which is why it is so useful for stress management. Through dispersal of toxins from tense and knotted muscles and improved blood circulation to the brain, Indian Head Massage may bring about a state of calm, peace and tranquillity and promote high levels of alertness and concentration. In addition, it may boost the immune system, helping to fend off disease and stress related disorders.
REIKI
Reiki is a natural healing energy activated by intention. It works on every level, not just the physical, and promotes the body’s regenerative self-healing ability.
Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to wellbeing; known as “ki" in Japan, “chi" in China and "prana" in India. Acupuncture, Tai Chi and Yoga are also based on the freeflow of this energy in a person.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Illness is often a time of great stress, and Reiki may help us cope by encouraging relaxation and bringing balance to the mind and emotions. Relaxation helps the immune system (the body’s natural repair and defence mechanism) to work more effectively. Reiki may also reduce pain and accelerate wound healing.
Reiki encourages and supports positive personal choices such as improving diet, taking more exercise and devoting time for rest or leisure activities; it may also reduce the need for alcohol and tobacco. Engendering greater inner harmony and balance, regular Reiki sessions may promote a calmer response to life’s challenges.
Reiki is a gentle energy, is easily adapted to most medical conditions and may be used safely by people of all ages, including the newborn, pregnant women, surgical patients, the frail and the elderly, regardless of their state of health.
It is a non-invasive therapy which can be used without any fear of side-effects or overdose. It can be used with confidence alongside conventional medicine or natural remedies because it acts in a complementary way.
Reiki may enhance everyday living, and regular sessions may help to promote development of a healthier, more resourceful state of being.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION?
A session is usually carried out with the patient sitting or tying down in a comfortable and peaceful environment. There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki energy passes easily through all materials, including plaster casts. A typical Reiki session lasts approximately one hour.
I place my hands gently, in a series of positions, on or over the body. The recipient automatically draws in only as much energy as is needed, using it in whatever way is most appropriate at the time.
Reiki may be experienced as a flow of energy, mild tingling, warmth, coolness, other sensations, or nothing at all. Reiki is deeply relaxing and has a profoundly calming effect which is particularly effective in relieving stress.
It is recommended that you rest for a while afterwards and drink plenty of water to aid the detoxifixation process. Be responsive to your body’s needs, e.g. resting if tired and allowing the energy to continue its work in the days following the session.
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO HAVE A REIKI SESSION?
Although even one session may make a difference, it is usually more effective to have a course of regular appointments. This can be weekly, fortnightly or monthly, depending on the individual's needs. A plan can be discussed with you and reviewed as necessary. This will always be subject to your own preferences and can be changed at any time, according to progress.
SAFETY
Reiki is a gentle, yet powerful complementary therapy which may be used with confidence alongside orthodox heatthcare. Reiki is not, however, an alternative to conventional medicine. You should therefore always consult a GP about acute or infectious conditions, and with problems of an urgent nature.
ABOUT JILL COTTON
Reflexologist
Reiki Master (Member of the UK Reiki Federation)
Practitioner of Indian Head Massage and the Hand and Foot 'm' technique
I am a fully qualified Reflexologist, having gained a Higher Diploma (Grade A, Level 3) in Aromatherapy and Reflexology with the National Home Study College.
I was introduced to Reiki when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer of 2001. I was feeling extremely anxious about the cancer treatment and found Reiki of huge benefit both physically and mentally, especially when coping with the after-effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
At the end of my cancer treatment I studied to become a Reiki Practitioner and was attuned in Reiki I and II in the summer of 2002. I became a Reiki Master in October 2008.
I charge £30 for a Reflexology, Reiki or Indian Head Massage session - approximately one hour. I charge £20 for a 30 minute session of the hand and foot 'm' technique.
I always take a case history before commencing to be sure that the therapy is suitable and tailored to the individual needs of the client.
Many people like to continue with regular appointments to maintain their health and wellbeing.
Concessions are available, so please enquire. There is an extra charge for mobile sessions to cover petrol, depending on how far I need to travel.
TESTIMONIALS
"I had a taster session of Reiki with Jill. It certainly helped instantly with my asthma and changed my mood around completely. I felt so comfortable with Jill that I took my daughter for a session. She has suffered with juvenile idiopathic arthritis since she was two. Jill did a wonderful job with her and helped her to relax and feel more at ease. Every joint in her body is affected, even her jaw. Jill worked over each joint and it was obvious that she was having an effect by the expressions on my daughter's face. On the way home, my daughter was able to walk easier and quicker and once we were home she was able to go up the stairs. Her emotions were more stable and positive. She also had a fuller range of movement in her ankes, which she hadn't experienced before. We saw a huge surge in energy which was delightful to observe and lasted for quite some time. It was a pleasure to meet Jill and wonderful to see how she helped our precious daughter. She will be having regular follow up treatments." Mrs. J.S.
"Thank you for the reflexology session last week which I found really enjoyable. My shoulders are now fine and I was amazed to find that the 'lumps' in my shoulders had disappeared." Mrs. A.C.
"I thought you might like to know that I have seen a big improvement in my dog after his Reiki treatment yesterday. He is moving around so much easier and got out of his bed this morning like a youngster!" Mrs. D.H.
"Thank you so much Jill - that was a lovely treatment and I feel greatly energised. My dog thanks you too as I am off to take her for a walk, which I wouldn't have been able to do if I had not had the treatment! Well done!" Miss J.C.
