SERVICES

Welcome to
Joanna Mead Counselling Service

My name is Joanna and I am a qualified counsellor and member of BACP.

I am a private practitioner working in central Bath, from The Practice Rooms.

Most people at some time experience mental and emotional distress; this is part of life. Talking to someone who is suitably qualified can be of enormous value at these times. You may have heard of the saying "A problem shared is a problems halved", and in my experience this is true. There is something about talking to someone, in a confidential space, without fear of judgement that can give us clarity to our situation, and facilitate healing.

My aim is to work with my clients in a way that facilitates their own individual journey, to empower them to make the changes they want to, and to enable to them to find some peace. I strive to build a warm and trusting relationship with each and every client I meet, & to provide an empathic & non judgemental environment, conducive to change.

I can work with people on a short term or long term basis depending on what the client would like. Short term work is usually anything from six to eighteen sessions, and for some people that is sufficient to induce change. For more complex issues such as relationship problems or moving on from past abuse, longer term counselling may be required. I will usually review the work we have done at every sixth session, so that we can decide whether more session would be beneficial. Sessions are normally weekly. I offer the first session free of charge, to give the client a chance to see whether they would like to continue, there is absolutely no obligation.

About me

Joanna Mead Dip Couns, MBACP

I completed my training at UWE in 2010, and have a Diploma in Counselling. My theoretical model is integrative which means that I incorporate a number of different theories into my work, mainly Psychodynamic and Humanistic. I am a member of British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists and am working towards full BACP accreditation. This means that I work within a code of conduct and ethics laid down by BACP and am accountable for my work.

I worked for a year with an organisation who offers support and counselling to woman with postnatal depression. The following year I went to work for an addiction agency, working with alcohol issues, using motivational techniques to facilitate change. I also did my training with a well known gambling support service at this time, and am qualified to work with problem gamblers.

I now work for another drug and alcohol support service, with clients inside the Criminal Justice System. I have recently completed my advanced training in domestic violence and abuse and am a Freedom group facilitator. The Freedom Programme is a group for women who have or are experiencing domestic violence.

I have a special interest in the areas of addiction, domestic abuse, and women's issues.

I am also able to work with the following:

  • Low confidence and self esteem
  • Stress
  • Feelings of shame and guilt
  • Depression
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Trauma from child abuse and abandonment
  • Work related issues
  • Relationship concerns or break ups (one to one only; I do not work with couples)
  • Postnatal depression and other parenting concerns
  • Family issues
I have and will continue to attend 2 day training courses on various topics such as 'Working with disclosure' (child abuse). I view these training courses as a necessary part of my clinical development.
