About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a tried and tested system of complementary healthcare which has been used for over 2,500 years in China to restore, promote and maintain good health.
Acupuncture can relieve specific symptoms, or just keep you feeling healthy and well. Increasingly people are becoming aware that good health means more than just an absence of illness, and are seeking acupuncture treatment to improve energy levels and overall wellbeing. Acupuncture is a holistic therapy, meaning that is looks at the body as a whole and identifies the root of conditions rather than simply treating symptomatically. In this way the cause of a complaint can be established and treated promoting long term good health.
Chinese medicine is based on the philosophy that energy or 'qi' flows through our bodies along channels or meridians. Any blockage in this flow causes pain or ill health. The flow of qi can be blocked both by physical factors such as injury, trauma or infection or by emotional factors such as anger, grief or anxiety. The acupuncturist works to unblock these channels and restore the smooth flow of energy, thus relieving pain and obstruction.
During treatment you will be asked questions about your symptoms and your medical history. This helps the acupuncturist to build up a complete picture of your condition. As well as taking a full medical history the acupuncturist will also take a person's pulses and look at their tongue. These are Chinese diagnostic tools which help to indicate where the blockages lie and which organs are being affected. Needles will then be inserted into acupuncture points in various places on your body. These needles are fine and solid and so are not usually felt as they go through the skin. Acupuncture points are chosen according to the symptoms displayed, and can be on any part of the body. As well as using needles the acupuncturist also uses tools such as moxabustion and cupping.
Frequency and length of treatment will depend on your individual condition. People usually have weekly treatment until their symptoms improve, and then treatments are less frequent. Some conditions improve after just a few treatments and some require more long-term treatment. Your acupuncturist will discuss this with you.
About Joanna
Joanna grew up in Hong Kong where she spent her early years immersed in Chinese culture.
Joanna still regularly visits her family in Hong Kong, and is convinced by the Chinese approach to wellbeing.
The Chinese approach to health makes so much sense to me. Their attitude towards diet, exercise and medicine is one that inspires me and which I endeavour to pass on to my patients. Watching the scores of people gathered in the parks every morning practising various forms of tai chi has always been an inspiration to me and has made a deep impression on my attitude to health and wellbeing
After graduating from the University of East Anglia with a BA(Hons) in English Literature and Philosphy, Joanna studied various forms of massage and body work. She was the manager of the shop and therapy rooms at Neals Yard Remedies in Norwich before moving on to be the manager of Neals Yard Remedies' flagship store in Covent Garden. During these years Joanna gained extensive experience of using complementary forms of healthcare.
Joanna studied acupuncture at the prestigious College of Integrated Chinese Medicine where she received her BSc(Hons) in Acupuncture. Joanna is a member of the British Acupuncture Council and as such abides by the Code of Safe Practice. She practices acupuncture in Ringwood and Fordingbridge, on the Hampshire/Dorset border.
