Welcome to Body - Centred Psychotherapy with John Leigh Dent

Body-Centred Psychotherapy

In body-psychotherapy the physical, emotional and mental are seen as inextricably linked. Memories are seen to be held in the body, reflecting a life’s story, from embryo through to present day.

Frequently, physical blocks (from tension headaches to chronic illnesses) are caused by unconscious feelings and thought patterns.

The body speaks the unconscious. It is adept at speaking the mind and can be the spirit’s greatest ally. In body-psychotherapy listening to the mind includes listening to the body.

Group Therapy

Open Up To Your ALIVENESS!

A personal development group

“You don’t feel your chains until you start to move” (Jenny James)

Thursday evenings

7.00pm – 9.00pm

In Hampstead Therapy Rooms, North London

Cost: £15 per evening (£12.00 unwaged/low income)

We all want to feel good about our lives and it’s easy to find ourselves searching endlessly for answers with no joy, Yet we often find what we want, the moment we stop looking for it because what we need is inside us.

The opening to your ALIVENESS group invites you to make contact with your body, your heart, your gut, your creativity, your truth, your natural rhythms and your emotional world along with others who are doing the same. Through letting others see the bits that might normally be hidden from the world, an acceptance of that which has been feared begins to take place and a need for genuine nourishing contact is met.

Bring your shy, inhibited, boisterous, fun, grumpy, loud, quiet self. There’ll be room for all.

These groups are partly structured and partly process orientated. The group will use movement, creativity, bodywork and dialogue and there will be plenty of space for sharing. The group will have a maximum of 8 people and is open to new members every 8 weeks if there is space available.

ALIVE and creative expression is our birth-right!

Requirements

To be part of the group there is a simple application form that needs to be filled out and a £24/30 non-refundable deposit which will be taken as payment for each person's final 2 groups.

A minimum commitment of 8 weeks is necessary, this helps create the containment and safety needed to allow trust, support and openness to flourish so that each person can go deeper into their process.

How I work

The sessions tend to be on the floor rather than chairs. There may be hands-on work but not in a mechanistic way. Instead I work with the feeling body, sometimes referred to as the 'energetic body'. I work in a sensitive and supportive way, acknowledging each person is unique; hence each session follows a unique course.

I use dialogue (psychotherapy), Gestalt (role play), movement and offer various creative tools. I occasionally work directly with the physical structure (if specifically asked for). The direction a session takes is determined by what is brought. Body-psychotherapy is a creative process where both therapist and client enter into a journey of discovery.

The therapeutic relationship

As well as looking at what goes on outside the the therapy room, attention may be brought to what is happening between therapist and client. This offers an opportunity to reflect on what triggers certain responses, helping to explore more closely ingrained (unconscious) patterns and where these may come from.

About John

I am convinced that feeling, expressing and understanding what is hidden in the body - not just intellectually but engaging on a somatic and intuitive level - can bring about profound psychological, emotional and physical healing. I also believe that having a connection to nature can play an essential part in restoring a deep sense of spiritual well being.

I live with my partner and son in North London
