Life is an ever-changing experience, which can sometimes feel like a roller coaster that we can’t slow down or get off. Counselling can offer a place to pause before we climb back on.

What is psychodynamic counselling?
Psychodynamic counselling is a therapeutic approach giving exploration to your thoughts and feelings in a safe, confidential environment, without judgement and with honesty. It offers an opportunity to explore yourself to look within and understand those thoughts that float in and out of your mind which can bring forth a mixture of emotions, that can at times be very hard to understand or control.
It is a journey that offers insight and understanding working towards an awareness of the self. It gives the opportunity to discover inbuilt defence mechanisms that perhaps no longer serve the person you have become as a result of the traumas we all experience in life.
People can become stuck in destructive patterns of thoughts and behaviour, unconsciously acting these out. These behaviours can create difficulties in relationships with the people around us. This can impact greatly upon our lives, sometimes in a most destructive fashion.
Counselling can be a quiet, safe space to breathe and think about your life. Who you are, where you are going and what you wish to gain. It can be a space to grieve the losses you have experienced in your life and the changes that happen throughout your life.
How does psychodynamic therapy work?
Psychodynamic therapy works with the unconscious processes operating in our minds that get played out whilst we go about our everyday lives. Because it is in our unconscious mind, we are not tuned into these processes, yet we act these out every minute of the day. Over whelming emotions can be connected to this unconscious thread including physical reactions.
Psychodynamic therapy works with the unconscious, bringing it to the conscious, creating an awareness of thought. It helps you to see things from a different perspective giving insight to the thoughts and feelings you may be struggling to understand.
What to expect
From our first contact, you will be offered an initial consultation. This will be 50 minutes long. During the consultation, we will explore information about your background and current support network. This is to gain a better understanding of what has brought you to, and what you are expecting from, our counselling sessions.
In the initial consultation, we will decide whether you feel this will be suitable to your needs. Once you have made your decision we will look at availability of times and days etc.
It is important in all therapy undertaken that a consistency is maintained. You will be offered weekly sessions lasting 50 minutes each.
Therapy is not a magic pill and I unfortunately do not have a magic wand. It is a journey of self -exploration which can at times be hard, but the rewards of awareness can be potentially life changing. I look forward to working with you to bring you those rewards.

About Laura
I started my training in 2005 at Goldsmiths University – to become a Psychodynamic counsellor and attained my Masters in Psychodynamic Counselling in 2008. I started my client work in 2006 at the Lorrimore Counselling centre, including a second placement at Waterloo Community Counselling which I left earlier this year. During this time I have done a short Bereavement course with Cruse and have gone on to do one day workshops to keep my skills updated and to develop myself as therapist.
I have worked with a vast array of adult clients with many difficult issues. Including the opportunity to work at school with 11- 18 years ( 2009 – 2012)
I chose Psychodynamic therapy because I feel passionate about the process and have truly seen its subtle changes in the clients that I have seen over the years. I feel we all deserve to know who we are and understand ourselves so we can grow and develop. Psychodynamic therapy looks at the root not just surface, bringing forth understanding of our true selves.
