History of Indian Head Massage
Ayurveda Massage has always played an important part in Indian life. It is said to originated before, or around 6000 BC. Ayurveda is a holistic healing science, which comprises of two words “Ayu” meaning life and “Veda” meaning knowledge, or science, so the literal meaning of the word is the science of life.
Indian Head Massage was originally developed as a grooming technique by women who used it to strengthen and improve the fullness of their hair. This was achieved by stimulating the pressure points on the scalp. It was particularly popular with women of fashion who wanted to enhance their appearance and the technique became part of everyday life and was practiced on young and old. It eventually became a tradition that was handed down through the generations.
It offers great benefits for the hair and scalp, apart from strengthening the hair and promoting growth, it is also said to help slow the greying process.
Eventually barbers developed a head massage using many of the same skills with their male clients. This then became a custom everyone from normal person to royalty would have barbers attend them in their individual homes, cutting hair and often offering champi (head massage) as part of the treatment. These treatments differed from the massages performed by women. It was more of an invigorating scalp massage which stimulated and refreshed the individual.
The barbers’ skills evolved through the ages. They were handed down from father to son in much the same way that women kept alive the tradition of hair massage and grooming by passing the techniques from mother to daughter.
Today, it is customary for Indian infants to receive a daily massage from birth until they are three years old to keep them supple and in good health. From six years of age, they are taught to share a massage with family members.
In 1973 the Indian Head Massage treatment was extended by Narenda Mehta to include not just the head, but the face, neck, shoulders upper back and arms. By focusing on these areas, which tend to hold stress and tension, this gentle form of massage can now offer a far greater range of physical and mental benefits.
Use of Oils
Indian Head Massage can be performed with or without oil. Soothing oils do help to maximise the benefits and to aid the reduction of stress. The most commonly used oils are:- - Almond Oil – The beneficial properties of this oil include reducing aches, pain and stiffness and generally promoting healthy hair. (Not suitable for people with nut allergies)
- Coconut Oil – is good for moisturizing the skin and encouraging hair growth. It also balances the body. Coconut oil is best used during the warm season as it is believed to have cooling properties. (Not suitable for people with nut allergies)
- Mustard Oil – Like Almond oil, mustard oil is useful for relieving aches, pains and stiffness. It can also be used to reduce swelling and is also good for purifying the blood by opening the pores. It is best used during the cold season as it is said to bring in warmth to the skin.
- Olive Oil – This oil has very similar properties to mustard oil, but without the pungent smell.
- Sesame Oil – This is probably the most common used oil. It is used to help relieve aches, pains and stiffness but is also said to benefit air growth and reduce graying, whilst promoting a natural shine.
After treatment - Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins; massage aids the removal of toxins from the body.
- Coffee, tea and cola should be avoided as they contain caffeine. Aim to drink two glasses of water after each drink of tea or coffee if not. Or and try to drink herbal infusions in place of tea or coffee
- Avoid any headache tablets as these too contain caffeine.
- Avoid eating a heavy meal. Eat a light and natural diet, as refined and processed foods add to the toxicity levels within the body and hinder the natural healing process
- Do not smoke or drink Alcohol for next 24 hours. Alcohol and smoking are counter-productive as they increase the levels of toxins in the body.
FAQ's
Q. How is a Reiki treatment given?
A. In a standard treatment Reiki energy flows from the practitioners hands into the client. The client is usually laying on a massage table but treatments can also be given while the client is seated or even standing. The client remains fully clothed. The practitioner places her/his hands on or near the clients body in a series of hand positions. These include positions around the head and shoulders, the stomach, and feet. Other, more specific positions may be used based on the clients needs. Each position is held for three to ten minutes depending on how much Reiki the client needs at each position. The whole treatment usually lasts between 45 and 90 minutes.
Q. What does a Reiki treatment feel like?
A. What one experiences during a Reiki treatment varies somewhat from person to person. However, feelings of deep relaxation are usually felt by all. In addition, many feel a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and surrounds them. As the Reiki energy encourages one to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear or other negative feelings a state of peace and well-being is experienced. Some drift off to sleep or report floating outside their bodies or have visions and other mystical experiences. At the end of the treatment, one feels refreshed with a more positive, balanced outlook.
Q. What can be treated with Reiki?
A. Reiki has had a positive affect on all forms of illness and negative conditions. This includes minor things like head or stomach aches, bee stings, colds, flu, tension and anxiety as well as serious illness like heart disease, cancer, leukemia, etc. The side effects of regular medical treatments have also been reduced or eliminated. This includes the negative effects of chemotherapy, post operative pain and depression as well as improving the healing rate and reducing the time needed to stay in the hospital. Reiki always helps and in some cases people have experienced complete healings which have been confirmed by medical tests before and after the Reiki treatments. However, while some have experienced miracles, they cannot be guaranteed. Stress reduction with some improvement in ones physical and psychological condition are what most experience.
