What is Counselling?
As a professional counsellor, I provide a private and confidential setting where there is sufficient trust to enable you to explore issues of concern to you. You may be experiencing a particular difficulty or suffering from general stress. You may be searching for direction or purpose in life or simply seeking greater personal fulfilment. Issues like these, and many others, can be explored in a safe and confidential environment with a counsellor in a way that is not always easy with friends or family.

I work using an integrated model of counselling using psychodynamic and person centred approaches.

My role is to help you to make sense of your thoughts and feelings. Unresolved anxiety, grief and anger can frustrate emotional growth and may lead to depression. As a counsellor, I will offer you an opportunity to explore and resolve these feelings in order to help alleviate distress.

I can help to examine situations and relationships that are proving troublesome, to locate the source of difficulty and explore options for coping. From this, you may come to understand more about yourself, feel less confused and consider any necessary changes, or perhaps come to terms with things that cannot be changed.

About Me
My name is Linda Carter and I work as a counsellor in private practice from my home in Duston, near Northampton in Northamptonshire.

Whilst working for the NHS with children and families, my journey into counselling began in 1995 when I studied with the British School of Counselling and qualified in the Counselling Skills and Theory Diploma.

I then began to work with parents of children with disabilities by facilitating parent support groups, individual and couples counselling, and therapeutic groups for siblings.

I continued with this work until 2001 when I moved from Buckinghamshire to Northamptonshire.

Since 2001 I have been working with Wellingborough Borough Council and later Northamptonshire County Council and have been involved in the development of Family Support Services based in schools. During this time I have facilitated work place supervision/consultation and have supported the development of 'Family Support' working practice guiding.

Other Services
Supportive groups for parents
Tailor made groups for schools or Health Centres, for example you may have a number of children and young people who are on the autistic spectrum and may want to provide support for their parents. We would meet with the parents, assess the needs and organise the relevant sessions including evaluation of impact and satisfaction.

Parenting groups
a/ Managing Children's Behaviour
The 'Managing children's behaviour' course is run for parents who feel they would benefit from meeting other parents with similar difficulties. The course offers a practical and down to earth approach which helps to build parents confidence in managing their child's behavior.

b/ Time Out for Special Needs
This course enables parents of children with special educational needs to share feelings and experiences and to explore their own solutions to problems on the basis of what has worked for them and what has not worked. Topics covered include self-esteem, coping with feelings and understanding and managing behaviour.

Student Counselling
We offer individual counselling sessions for students experiencing emotional or psychological difficulties relating to academic or social problems.
