Herbal medicine - a therapy for you?

With professional advice, herbal medicine can be used safely and effectively for many medical conditions as an alternative, or as complementary to, conventional medicial treatment. If you are seeking an effective, natural and gentle approach to healthcare, then herbal medicine is for you. It can benefit men, women and children, from the very young to the very elderly.

What medical problems could herbal medicine help me with ?

Herbal medicine can help with a a surprisingly wide range of conditions, particularly chronic problems which may be stubborn or resistant to more conventional treatments. For example, it may help with:

Skin complaints:e.g. acne, psoriasis, acne rosacea, eczema
Musculo-skeletal problems such as rheumatoid and osteoarthritis
Cardio-vascular issues, blood pressure, varicose veins
Gynaecological problems,
Menopausal symptoms
Insomnia, anxiety, depression and nervous states
Respiratory problems, for example asthma
Urinary conditions, for example cystitis
Fatigue states
Men's health issues
and much much more .............
(See the 'Conditions' page of my web-site for more information).

An holistic therapy, herbal medicine considers the health of your whole body, not just your symptoms, although symptomatic relief is always important. This means that during your consultation, which may take up to one and a half hours, we will discuss your medical history so I can see how this may be impacting on your health now. I will work with you to identify and help any underlying health conditions, which may be causing or aggravating your symptoms.

After your consultation, I will use this information to make up a herbal remedy specifically tailored to your condition. I will do this by using a variety of different herbs taken from the huge number available to me as a professional herbalist. This remedy will not only be targeted towards giving you symptomatic relief, but also to assist you towards regaining and ultimately maintaining a future healthier state.

My Philosophy

"I am passionate about my practice and aim to provide a caring therapeutic environment, where you will have time to explore your health concerns in a supportive and confidential setting. It is important to me that as my patient you will be treated as an individual, not just a set of symptoms ".

"I use high quality, carefully sourced, gentle, but effective herbal remedies and I practice within the western herbal tradition, but also use some traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs".

Why visit a medical herbalist?

You may wonder why, when herbal remedies are so easily available from health shops, you should visit a trained herbalist. Self-treatment with over the counter herbal remedies may be effective for treating some conditions, much like the conventional medicines you would buy directly from your pharmacist for minor ailments. However, just as you might visit your doctor, for more complex and serious problems, consulting a trained herbalist has a number of advantages.

Over the counter remedies can vary in quality and efficacy and sometimes it is difficult to identify the right ones for you. Also, although herbs are generally gentle in action and have few side effects, care is needed, as some are not suitable for use with certain conditions and have known interactions with conventional pharmaceutical drugs.

Most importantly, herbal medicine, although firmly rooted within conventional medicine, takes a very different therapeutic approach which can be very helpful for some long term chronic conditions.

Underlying health problems, such as the state of your digestion, any inflammatory processes going on within your body, stress, lifestyle and diet and so on, can all have a significant impact on the manifestation of symptoms in many conditions. A skilled medical herbalist will seek to identify and redress these by matching what is going on within your body with the appropriate herbs for you. They do this by using their extensive knowledge of the actions of individual herbs and of blending herbal formulas. Therefore, the herbal medicines made up for you at the end of a consultation, will be specifically aimed at helping your underlying problems with the objective of relieving symptoms and promoting health at a deeper level. This is something much harder to achieve by using generic over the counter remedies.

About herbal medicines
Herbal dispensaries

Herbalists have a very wide range of herbs at their disposal, many more than are available to the general public. I have my own dispensary which contains well over a hundred different herbs. From these, individual medicines are made up for each patient at the end of each consultation on the basis of their condition. These herbal medicines may often contain mixtures of up to eight or nine different herbs, which are carefully selected on the basis of the condition(s) that patients present with.

Quality

I only use quality herbal medicines from reputable suppliers, this is important for both the efficacy of the product and its safety.

My history and qualifications

My interest in herbal medicine began many years ago, when a member of my family, who suffered from severe osteo-arthritis, gained great and lasting benefit from consulting a medical herbalist and using herbal medicine.

Over the years I discovered more and more about the potential and effectiveness of herbal medicine. Inspired by this and wanting to practice as a trained medical herbalist, I undertook an intensive three year degree course in herbal medicine at the University of Central Lancashire, where I gained a first class BSc. honours degree. This allowed me to be admitted to membership of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists(NIMH).

My qualifications included the study of orthodox diagnostics, clinical skills, physical examination, nutrition, pharmacology, physiology, anatomy and herbal therapeutics, which included the safe use and prescribing of herbs.

During my time in practice I have learnt more and more about the subtleties of herbal therapy and the range of medical problems which can be effectively managed using herbs medicinally.

National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH)
