The Bowen Technique - How did it get its name?
Tom Bowen was born in 1916 in Brunswick, Australia. He treated the aches and pains of the people with whom he worked in the cement works and woollen mill in Geelong. In the 1960s, he opened his own clinic. During the 1970s Tom Bowen was treating 13,000 people a year. He died in 1982.
The Bowen technique is now being taught to final year university students of Osteopathy in Australia.
Bowen Treatment
Bowen practitioners treat people holistically. People present with a wide range of aches and pains, injuries and health problems. There are no contra-indications to treatment. However, Bowen practitioners will always advise people to consult their doctors if there is any doubt over whether or not to treat. The Bowen Technique is not intended as a substitute for medical advice or treatment.

What is the treatment like?
The treatment is gentle and therefore appropriate for everyone, from new-born babies to the elderly and infirm. The practitioner makes gentle rolling movements over muscles, tendons and ligaments on the body, mostly using their fingers and thumbs. No hard-tissue manipulation or force is used.
Bowen treatment is not usually mixed with other physical therapies, e.g. physiotherapy, osteopathy, massage, chiropractic etc. A gap of 5 to 10 days is usually allowed between Bowen and any other physical therapy so that the subtle information supplied to the body during a Bowen session can be processed.
Treatment usually takes from 30 to 45 minutes and can be performed through light clothing. After treatment, the patient is advised to move frequently and drink lots of water to help their recovery.
Testimonials
Bowen and reflexology "I have been coming to Karen for a number of years, initially for reflexology which always help me relax and eases various aches and pains. More recently the Bowen sessions have helped with flare ups of back, neck and hip pain. I thoroughly recommend Karen to anyone."

Spa Therapy Manicure "I have recently had a Spa Therapy Manicure and i am so pleased with the treatment and length of time the polish lasted. The OPI products are lovely and left my skin feeling wonderful and the choice of colours are fantastic. Jamie who did the manicure was very friendly and did a great job. Well done and i will be booking again soon."

Facial "I have had many facials over the years and recently i booked one at Natures Ways. I can honestly say it was the best experiance i have ever had. Jamie was very friendly and made me feel at ease straight away. What was refreshing was the consultation process as she found out what my skin was like and the things that afffected it. The treatment was so relaxing i fell asleep. I felt so relaxed and refreshed after the facial and my skin was glowing. The after care advice and guidance was excellent and being able to sample products was as a real bonus. I intend to have a facial on a regular basis and look forward to my next one."

Reflexology "Thank you so much for the help you have recently given me. I was suffering very badly with sinusitis and the medication given to my by my doctor did not seem to be shifitng it. You were recommended to me by a friend and i am glad i followed her advice. I had never had reflexology before but now my sinusitis had cleared i intend to have treatments on a regular basis as i found the whole experiance of visiting natures ways very relaxing and helpful."

Bowen treatments "I am a mother with a young baby of 18 months and ever since the birth I have had lower back pain. Some days it was so bad I could not pick up my baby and this was very distressing.
The Bowen Technique was recommended to me by a friend who had found it very helpful. I had never heard of it and was sceptical when I went for my 1st treatment. I experienced some relief and was looking forward to my next one.
After the second treatment I was in quite a bit of discomfort and thought I should cancel, but I spoke to Karen who explained that this was a positive sign that my body was trying to get better.
I can only say that I am so glad I listened to her as my back is now so much better and I have no problems picking up my daughter.
Thank you Bowen and Karen."
