What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu, meaning 'finger pressure', is a traditional Japanese healing therapy based on the Oriental Medicine theory that ki (or energy) flows throughout the body along channels called meridians.

An individual's health can be affected when the energy flow is blocked or becomes out of balance.

By using pressure applied to the meridians and associated acupressure points a Shiatsu treatment helps to rebalance the healthy flow of ki and supports the body in maintaining its own health.

Shiatsu works holistically with the whole person, not only at a physical level but also at a mental and emotional level. Your Practitioner will take all aspects of your health into account when making a diagnosis and will tailor your treatment accordingly.

What to expect from a Treatment?

Shiatsu is usually carried out on a futon or padded mat at floor level. The client remains fully clothed. It is possible to receive Shiatsu sitting on a chair if you are unable to lie down, or on a massage table.

Your practitioner may use thumbs, palms, elbows, or feet to apply gentle pressure to your body, using stretches and gentle manipulation where appropriate.

After a Shiatsu you will feel relaxed and invigorated.

Shiatsu can work with a specific condition or can be enjoyed as a deeply relaxing massage which can help prevent the build up of stress in our daily lives.

Guidelines for receiving Shiatsu

You will need to wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing preferably cotton, eg sweatshirt and jogging trousers.

Do not eat a heavy meal in the two hours prior to treatment.

Avoid drinking alcohol before or after the treatment.

Sessions last approximately 1 hour and include a short time for discussion. The first session will include taking a detailed case history.

A 'healing reaction' may occur as the body releases toxins or emotions after the session. Drink plenty of water to smooth the flow of changes through your system.

If at all possible avoid strenuous or stressful activities after your session.
