Thirty years of professional experience
I am a US trained clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience as a qualified psychotherapist in the U.S, Switzerland, and the U.K. I have also lived and taught psychology at university level in all of these countries. I have spent eight years in human resource consultation with industry and have set up several HR programmes.
I am a UK citizen and am now living in the U.K I am a U.K. Chartered Psychologist and an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society.
For the past 15 years I have had a private practice in London. I have now moved to the country (Gloucestershire) where I am continuing my medico-legal work and my face-to-face private practice on a limited basis. In addition to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy I am incorporating biofeeback into my practice. I also offer online (Skype) therapy services.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavoural Therapy is an approach that aims to solve problems concerning dysfunctional emotions, behaviors and cognitions through a goal-oriented, systematic procedure.
There is extensive empirical evidence that CBT is effective for the treatment of a variety of problems, including mood disorders, anxiety, personality disorders, eating disorders and substance abuse. Treatment is often directive, with specific technique-driven brief, direct, and time-limited treatments for specific psychological disorders. The techniques are taught to the client and are then available to the client for continued use in later stressful periods of his/her life. Some clinicians and researchers are more cognitively oriented (e.g., cognitive restructing) while others are more behaviorally oriented (in vivo exposure ). Other interventions combine both (e.g. imaginal exposure therapy).
Biofeedback
I am now offering biofeedback in all cases of generalized anxiety disorder and other stress related conditions. Biofeedback technology and training combined with cognitive behavioural therapy has proven extremely effective in the clinical practice of psychotherapy.
I offer a specialized two to three month treatment plan combining CBT and biofeedback and designed especially for the treatment of generalized anxiety.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a form of depth psychology, the primary focus of which is to reveal the unconscious content of a client's psyche in an effort to alleviate psychic tension. In this way, it is similar to psychoanalysis, but psychodynamic therapy tends to be briefer and less intensive than psychoanalysis. It also relies on the interpersonal relationship between client and therapist more than other forms of depth psychology. In terms of approach, this form of therapy also tends to be more eclectic than others, taking techniques from a variety of sources, rather than relying on a single system of intervention.
Transactional Analysis
Transactional Analysis is a theory of personality and a systematic therapy for personal growth and personal change.
TA describes how people are structured psychologically. It uses what is perhaps its best known model (or template) i.e. the ego-state (Parent-Adult-Child) model to do this. The same model helps explain how people function and express their personality ini their interpersonal behaviour. This model (or template) is extremely useful in understanding our own and other's emotional reactions in certain situations.
TA also offers a theory of child development by explaining how our adult patterns of life originate in childhood. This explanation is based on the idea of a "life (or childhood) Script" - the assumption that we unconsciously continue to re-play childhood strategies, even when this results in pain and defeat.
Existentialist Therapy
Existential psychotherapy is a method of therapy that operates on the belief that inner conflict within a person is due to that individual's confrontation with the givens of existence. These givens are the inevitability of death, freedom and its attendant responsibility, existential isolation, and finally meaninglessness. These four givens, also referred to as ultimate concerns, form the body of existential psychotherapy and compose the framework in which a therapist conceptualizes a client's problem in order to develop a method of treatment.
