What is Nutritional Therapy?
Nutritional therapy is a holistic discipline based on the principle of healing with foods, a principle that has been used in indigenous societies for centuries and is finally gaining wide acceptance in Western Markets. Nutrition as the key to good health is the all-embracing fundamental principle used since the time of the famous Greek doctor and founder of western medicine, Hippocrates, to help people of all ages to stay at their personal peak of energy and vitality. Today, new insights of food scientists play a significant role in the practice of nutritional therapy as preventative medicine.
A Nutritional Therapist works with nutrients derived from whole and organic foods to treat patients for a wide range of conditions. A Nutritional Therapist is trained and authorised to prescribe supplements of specific vitamins, minerals, amino acids in therapeutic dosages, which may be much larger quantities that the recommended daily allowances (RDAs) found on cereal packets, for example. Nutritional Therapy doesn’t necessarily focus on calories counting, but instead analyses the physiological and biochemical processes involved in nourishment and metabolism.
