ABOUT SHONA
I am an experienced professional reflexologist, fully qualified and insured to practice on clients of all ages. I am a member of the Association of Reflexologists which establishes standards for the profession and provides a network of qualified practitioners to which the public can refer with confidence. As a member, I am regulated by the Association's Code of Practice and Ethics.
Having originally trained as a nurse, I went on to study with the International Institute of Reflexology (IIR) and graduated as a practitioner in 2007. Since then I have further developed my knowledge of foot and hand reflexology by being tutored by Dwight Byers, Principal of the IIR and Anthony Porter, founder of Advanced Reflexology Training. I am currently working from my Tayport Therapy Room as well as being part of the team at Appletree Clinic, Dundee.

REFLEXOLOGY
About Reflexology
The principle of Reflexology is that there are reflex points on the feet and hands that correspond to all the organs, glands and parts of the body. Pressure is applied to these reflex points with the thumb and fingers and this stimulation may improve circulation, unblock nerve impulses and bring about a general feeling of well-being. The aim of treatment is to achieve and maintain a state of harmony between the physical, mental and emotional aspects of your make-up and in this way it may help to alleviate troublesome symptoms.
By relaxing you as well as working on all the systems of your body, hormone production and circulation, Reflexology may encourage anything that is out of kilter to gently normalize and thereby help to minimise the effects of stress. We all need a certain amount of stress so that we can perform to the best of our ability but stressors that affect us in a negative way should preferably be dealt with before they cause us to experience physical symptoms.
What you can expect from your first reflexology session
At the initial appointment, I am required to take a relevant medical and lifestyle history. This is not for the purposes of diagnosing any medical problems you may be experiencing but rather to allow me to devise a treatment plan which is tailored to your individual needs and so that you will experience the best possible outcomes. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the treatment before being required to remove your socks/tights and shoes and to sit in a reclining chair so that your feet can be elevated. If it is not possible for you to lie with your feet elevated, don't worry, I can work on your hands with the same results. You may be surprised that you have some sore areas on your feet or hands that you didn't know were there! These often represent an area of imbalance in that particular reflex area and I will generally focus attention on these points for a little longer than normal.
Including the treatment, you can expect this first appointment to last for 1¼ to 1½ hours. If subsequent appointments are required, these should take approximately 1 hour.
You may require a course of treatments. I will be happy to discuss this with you at the end of your first appointment.

REIKI
What is Reiki?
It is thought that Reiki healing originated in the Far East as long ago as 500BC, but has only developed in the West relatively recently.
Reiki, as it has developed recently, was taught by Dr Mikao Usui in Japan in the early part of the 20th Century and subsequently brought to the west by Mrs Hawayo Takata around 1938. She taught 22 Reiki Masters (or teachers) and the use of the Reiki healing method has thereby spread widely throughout the western world since then
In Japanese, 'Reiki' means 'universal life-force energy'. Practitioners are attuned by a Reiki Master to enable them to give this hands-on healing technique which works holistically to heal the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual. It is a safe, gentle technique and may promote relaxation and well-being.
Reiki practitioners are encouraged to live by a set of principles which uphold the spirit of gratitude in everything, tolerance, diligence, honesty and respect for all people and living things. Additionally it is expected that practitioners use Reiki on themselves on a regular basis for healing and self-awareness.
What you should expect of your first session
You can expect your first Reiki treatment to take approximately 1 hour.
There will be an initial, short interview during which your practitioner will ask you any relevant medical questions and how you would like to benefit from Reiki. You will also be able to ask any questions you may have. You will be asked to lie on a therapy couch and the treatment will begin. It will not be necessary to remove any clothing except your coat and shoes and don't worry if it is not possible for you to lie flat as the treatment can be given in a sitting position and will have the same beneficial effects!
Following the treatment you may experience a feeling of deep relaxation and well-being.
It may not always be immediately obvious how Reiki is working but rest-assured it works on many different levels and can have unexpected benefits.
From a personal point of view, Reiki has changed how I think about life and has led me to make changes in my life that I would not have previously envisioned. I know there are many more positive and wonderful experiences to come!

INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE
In my experience this is a fabulously relaxing, and uplifting therapy. As well as working on the head, massage of the neck, back, shoulders, arms, scalp and face are incorporated into the treatment. Stimulation of many of the points on the major energy meridians on the head, neck and back may help to relieve stress-related head symptoms such as headaches, neck and shoulder tension and as a result aid better sleep. Along with the use of your choice of essential oils and balms to enhance the experience, a 50 minute session could transport you to your very own nirvana. Bliss!
Mainsteam science is becoming much more accepting of the fact that the mind can have a powerful effect on our health, and research is showing that our thoughts can influence our ability to assist our bodies to heal themselves. I believe that when we are stressed, even through the day to day things like work, running a home, bringing up children etc, our thought processes can sometimes become quite negative and this may eventually manifest in physical symptoms that can affect our ability to cope. We can help to change this to a more positive focus by taking steps to redress any imbalance in our lives. We can learn to listen to our bodies and to make time to recharge in a positive way. Reflexology, Reiki and Indian Head Massage are all complementary therapies that have ancient origins but, in my opinion, have a valuable place in our lives today. They are all wonderfully relaxing and rejuvenating. Whether you choose, or are advised, to have a course of treatments or an hour of 'me-time' once a month you may wish you had done it years ago!
All that said, no complimentary therapies are intended to take the place of conventional medicine. You should always seek the advice of your GP if you are worried about your symptoms.
Please feel free to contact me for a chat prior to booking an appointment if you have any questions that are not answered on these pages.

TESTIMONIALS
I've always been a bit sceptical regarding alternative medicine, but having had several Reflexology treatments from Shona, I am now converted!
Shona, having been a trained nurse, has a gentle, sympathetic nature and during each treatment takes special care with the more sensitive, problematic areas. She works methodically round each foot in turn and then focuses on breathing and relaxation, using a variety of techniques.
The effect may not be instantaneous and some conditions do require a course of treatments, but following each visit I usually enjoy a deep, deep sleep and wake up feeling refreshed with a true sense of well-being.
Over the years I have suffered from various conditions and have found my treatments to be beneficial, both mentally and physically, and would have no hesitation in recommending Shonas' services."
Aileen D
"I asked Shona if she could do anything for the severe and debilitating pain that I have in the base of my thumb and she agreed to help using hand reflexology.
Immediately after the first session I could use my hand normally again and Shona continues to help when it bothers me. I can't thank Shona enough."
Susan S
"I would thoroughly recommend Shona for Reflexology. Sessions are delivered with great expertise, sensitivity and calmness. The best Reflexology I have experienced."
Liz C
"How can a treatment which is so soothing and relaxing also fill me with energy when we're done? Shona has a firm but gentle touch and terrific knowledge of the connections made between the feet and other areas of the body. It's a totally unintrusive treatment which is a great lift for health and spirits. I feel totally confident when my feet are in her hands!!"
