SERVICES

Welcome to
Ruth Overington Counselling

About Me
Hello, I am a experienced, qualified counsellor, I work with individuals, couples, children, young people and families from a consulting room in Salisbury city centre.

I work with issues around:
Stress, Anxiety, Loss & Grief, Relationships, Depression, Self harm, Eating/food issues, Self-esteem, Sexual abuse, Domestic abuse, Trauma, Anger, work related issues... If I have not included anything that relates to you please feel free to contact me for further discussion, as it is not always easy to name our issues.

Counselling

My main training is Integrative, this means that I am able to draw my theoretical knowledge from the three main counselling approaches, cognitive behavioural, humanistic and psychodynamic. I have included a brief description of these counselling approaches.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) combines cognitive and behavioural therapies, and involves changing the way you think (cognitive) and how you respond to these thoughts (behaviour). CBT is based on the principle that people learn unhelpful ways of thinking and behaving. Identifying these thoughts, feelings and behaviours can enable you to challenge negative ways of thinking and help promote positive feelings and behavioural changes.

Humanistic Therapy
Humanistic therapy sees people as having an innate tendency to develop towards their full potential. But this is often blocked or distorted by our life experiences. As a counsellor using this approach I aim to provide an environment in which the client does not feel judged or threatened. This enables a client to experience and accept more of who they are as a person, and reconnect with their own values and sense of self-worth.

Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy focuses on unconscious thought processes which show themselves in our behaviour. The therapy aims to increase self-awareness and understanding of how your past has influenced present thoughts and behaviours, by exploring your unconscious patterns. Looking at unresolved issues and conflicts, and talking about important people and relationships in your life.

I work with this knowledge, offering counselling that emphasises the importance of the relationship between client and counsellor whilst using skills and techniques that are appropriate for each individual.

I offer brief, short term or long term therapy. If you are thinking of entering into therapy and are not sure what would best suite your needs please contact me to discuss this further.

If you choose to come for counselling the first session will involve you and I agreeing an understanding of the focus of further sessions. Also importantly whether we both feel comfortable in working together.

Experience

I have worked in a variety of settings over the last ten years both voluntary organisations and local authority.

Within these settings, my role has not always been as a counsellor, this experience has given me a solid platform from which my counselling career has been able to evolve.

I have worked as a counsellor for:
The Andover Crisis & Support Centre, A local private special needs School. Most recently as a Primary Mental Health Worker (child & adolescent) for Wiltshire Council.

During this time I have counselled adults, children and young people, couples and families.

I have a particular training and interest in working with children and young people (six upwards) using a variety of techniques to enable them to express their emotions through creative mediums.

At Present:
I have been in Private Practice since October 2009 from a consulting room at Blue Boar Row in Salisbury city centre. I am a counsellor for Simon Says (child bereavement).

I am a partner and co-founder of 'Talkabout' a counselling service providing low cost therapy for those on benefits, low incomes, and students, to inquire about this service please use the contact information above, please state it is the talkabout service you are interested in.
