What is Osteopathy?
As an osteopath I treat many conditions, but most people think of me as a “back specialist” as back pain is what many osteopaths treat a lot of the time. Osteopathic treatment does not target symptoms only, but treats the parts of your body that have caused the symptoms. Osteopaths have an holistic approach and believe that your whole body will work well if your body is in good structural balance. Imagine, for example, a car that has one of its front wheels not quite pointing straight. It may run well for a while but after a few thousand miles the tyre will wear out. You can apply this example to the human body which is why it’s so important to keep the body in good balance. The wide range of techniques used in osteopathy, allow me to focus on every patients’ individual needs.
What will I do?
I assess and treat people of any age, from the elderly to the newborn and from pregnant women to sports people. Patients are referred to me by GPs, health visitors and midwives, but a referral isn’t necessary unless you want to use your private health insurance. Just give me a call to make an appointment or chat about any worries you may have.
What happens?
- First, I’ll chat with you to ensure I understand your medical history and day-to-day routine. We’ll talk about things like your diet, exercise and what is happening in your life, as these may gives clues to help my diagnosis. I may feel your pulse and check your reflexes, perhaps take your blood pressure and even refer you for an x-ray if I think you need one.
- I will look at you posture and see how you move your body, learning what hurts where and when. To do this properly I’ll need you to undress to your underwear, so please wear something comfortable to save both our blushes!
- Using touch I’ll find out which areas are sensitive or tight, which will help me identify what is going on. Sometimes I might feel that osteopathy is not right for you and refer you to your GP.
- Now we can start on your treatment, using a wide range of gentle manipulations, depending on your age, fitness and diagnosis. Treatment is different for everyone but will involve various techniques such as soft tissue massage and moving your joints about to release tension and stretch muscles. This may feel a bit uncomfortable at the time and sometimes for a day after treatment, but will help relieve your pain in the long term. Such discomfort is a normal, healthy response to the treatment I will give you.
- Sometimes when I move your joints, you may hear a “click”. Don’t worry, this won’t hurt and is just like the click people hear when they crack their knuckles, and I’ll warn you if it’s likely to happen.
At every stage I will explain what tests or treatment I am carrying out and why. Your consent, understanding and comfort are of paramount importance in ensuring the best way forward for your health.
CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY is a refined and subtle form of osteopathic treatment which focuses on correcting and maintaining the rhythmic flow of cerebro-spinal fluid through the cranium (skull) and spine.
I will place my hands on the patient's head, spine and feet, this encourages relaxation enabling muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons to let go of deeply held strain. This allows the cranial rhythm to re-establish itself and the body’s self-healing mechanisms to take effect.
The gentle yet extremely effective cranial approach is suitable for many patients as an adjunct to structural osteopathy, but is particularly suitable for babies, children and expectant mothers. Cranial osteopathy can help with many symptoms which I will be happy to discuss with you at no obligation, just call or email!
