Holistic Massage
The word “holistic” comes from the Ancient Greek word “holos” meaning “whole”. Holistic Massage treats the mind and body as a whole.
A combination of massage techniques are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body, particularly muscles.
Holistic Massage can help to:
- Relieve muscle fatigue, soreness and stiffness by either kneading, stretching or compressing the muscles or by indirectly working the nervous system to allow muscles to relax.
- Improve muscle suppleness by loosening and separating the fascias of the muscles
- Improve circulation thereby improving delivery of nutrients, gases and waste removal (including removal of the build up of lactic acid in the muscles after exercise)
- Maintain elasticity of muscles fibres, which will improve the tone of the muscle
- Exfoliate the skin and increase sebum production, which makes the skin more soft and supple.
- Encourage deeper and more relaxed respiration
- Promote sleep and general physical relaxation
- Balance nervous system
- Stimulate digestion and excretion
- Boost immunity
On the first visit I will carry out a consultation to give me an insight into any areas that need specific attention, so please allow extra time for this.
You will be required to undress down to your underwear, but large soft towels will be used to keep you warm and preserve your modesty.
Ayurvedic Head Massage
Ayurveda is the traditional medical system of India, meaning “ayur” (life) and “veda” (knowledge) in Sanskrit. Ayurveda holds that the universe comprises of five elements which form the three vital doshas (Tridosha): Vata (air + space), Pitta (fire + water) and Kapha (earth + water). These doshas make up the physical and psychological aspects of the human being known as Prakriti or constitution. Imbalance of the Tridosha caused by an impairment of Agni (digestive enzymes) results in ill health.
Shirobhyanga is a deeply relaxing head, neck and shoulder massage using Ayurvedic oil specific to your dosha type. It works on marma points , which are vital points in the body where the subtle Prana (life energy) is converted, regulated and stored for use by the body and mind. They are also sites of the Tridosha (Vata, Pitta & Kapha). In total there are 108 Marmas throughout the body and 12 of these are classified as Padu Marmas or Vital life centers. Six from the 12 vital life centres are located in the head and neck region. This shows how very critical and vital the head and neck region is in relation to the whole of our physical and psychological functioning.
Ayurvedic Head Massage can help to:
- de-stress the whole body and aid sleep
- increase of the flow of cerebro-spinal fluids, thus strengthening the nervous system
- disperse toxins from tense and knotted muscles and improve blood circulation in previously congested muscles
- oxygenate the brain
- combat eyestrain, tinitus, jaw ache and sinusitis
- stimulate lymphatic drainage
- nourish the hair roots and prevent excessive hair loss
- reduce symptoms of insomnia, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, constipation, diarrhea, IBS, headaches, migraines, high blood pressure, indigestion and many others.
Your treatment will last approximately half an hour. During your first appointment I will carry out a consultation, so please allow extra time for this. You will need to remove your top and wrap yourself in a towel. You will sit on a chair and Oil will be applied to your head, neck and shoulders, which you may wash off as soon as you get home or you may leave it overnight.
Ayurvedic Facial
The Ayurvedic Facial is not just cosmetic, but a deep and effective Ayurvedic therapy. It is designed to restore optimal function to the lymph and skin; removing stress and bringing a deep sense of relaxation to the mind and body.
In Ayurveda there are seven tissues or systems we treat in priority, know as the “dhatus.” The first of the seven is called the “rasa dhatu,” or the lymph of the body. The second is the blood, or the “rakta dhatu”.
The Ayurvedic Facial treats the lymph through the skin, which then prevents an imbalance from arising in the blood stream. This facial stimulates lymphatic drainage from the skin into the circulatory system of the body. If the skin gets dry and toxic from the environment and the lymph becomes congested, the skin will be rendered non-functional. These impurities slotted for lymph and skin removal will be shunted into the muscles, joints and fat cells, creating problems there, and further age the texture of the skin.
If your lymphatic system is chronically congested, you may notice some of the following symptoms: wrinkles, dry skin, new skin tags or moles, eczema, rashes, itching skin, and edema (fluid retention), allergies, low thyroid, compromised immunity, headaches, sore throats, fatigue, sore feet, muscle or joint pain.
The Ayurvedic Facial uses completely natural, chemical-free and preservative-free Ayurvedic products imported from India to detoxify the deep tissues of the skin, trigger a balanced lymphatic flow, and restore the life, vigor and function of the skin.
Your treatment will last approximately 1 hour (including consultation). I will start by cleansing and toning your skin, then using a facial scrub to remove dirt and oil from deep within your skin. I will then carry out a specialist marma point massage incorporating areas of the face, neck and scalp using oil specific to your dosha type. Afterwards I will apply a face mask and carry out a hand massage while leaving the mask on your face. Finally I will remove the mask, tone and moisturise your skin.
Benefits of Ayurvedic Facial include:
- More relaxed muscles and tissues of the face, neck and scalp
- Improved appearance of the skin of the forehead, eyes, nose and mouth
- Reduction in neck & shoulder tension
- Healthy glow to the skin
- Reduction in symptoms related to sinusitis, allergies, jaw tension, eye strain, headaches, stress, insomnia and many more
Reflexology
Reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China; and was introduced to the western world as “zone therapy” in 1913.
It is a gentle therapy that works on the feet or hands to encourage the body to heal itself. Following illness, stress, injury or disease, the body is in a state of “imbalance” and vital energy pathways are blocked, preventing the body from functioning effectively. By applying pressure to your feet or hands using my thumbs and forefingers I may detect imbalances, and working these points can release blockages in order to restore energy flow and encourage healing.
Reflexology is suitable for all ages and may bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, such as:- Stress, anxiety and depression
- Insomnia
- IBS and other digestive disorders
- Headaches and migraine
- Asthma
- Muscle and join pain and discomfort
- PMS, irregular periods and menopausal symptoms
Many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress. Reflexology may help people to cope on a physical, mental and emotional level thereby encouraging healing and wellbeing in all areas of life.
On the first visit I will carry out a consultation to give me an insight into any areas that need specific attention, so please allow extra time for this. The treatment will be carried out fully clothed. You will just need to remove your shoes and socks if you are having a foot treatment.
Each session of reflexology works on an individual basis. After having completed a course of reflexology treatments for a specific condition, many people find it beneficial to continue to have occasional treatments to maintain health and well-being.
I do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe.
STONE THERAPY REFLEXOLOGY
The ancient art of stone therapy incorporates the application of warm basalt stones and cold marble stones combined with manual reflexology. The subtle energies of the stones provide a deeply relaxing treatment which balances body and mind. The heat from the stones penetrate up to ten times deeper and brings about change in the body’s internal energy flow (Chi).
Effects of applying Warm Basalt Stones to the feet:
Increased circulation
Elimination of waste products
Improved immunity
Increased metabolism
Release of muscle tension
Effects of applying Cold Marble Stones to the feet:
Reduces swelling and inflammation
Eases decongestion (e.g deep tissue or sinus)
Soothes irritation
Provides pain relief for muscle cramp and tension
Ayurvedic Foot Massage
Ayurveda is the traditional medical system of India, meaning “ayur” (life) and “veda” (knowledge) in Sanskrit. Ayurveda holds that the universe comprises of five elements: Air (prana), Fire, Earth, Ether (space) and Water; which are in a state of perpetual motion, interacting with each other.
In combination, the five elements form the three vital doshas (Tridosha):
These doshas make up the physical and psychological aspects of the human being known as Prakriti or constitution. Imbalance of the tridosha caused by an impairment of Agni (digestive enzymes) results in ill health.
PADABHYANGA is an invigorating, yet deeply relaxing, Foot and Leg massage which works on marma points to stimulate the body’s vital organs. This massage rebalances your chakras and harmonizes the entire body. It can help to:- Preserve your eyesight
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Strengthen your immunity
- Improving blood circulation
- Reducing swelling in the feet and legs
- Reducing cellulite (when having a full leg massage)
On the first visit, I will carry out a consultation to determine your dosha type in order to tailor the treatment to your specific needs. The massage is given using special oils for your specific dosha type, and herbal massage powder may also be used.
AYURVEDIC TONING LEG MASSAGE
UDVARTHANAM is an invigorating Full Leg massage which may help to reduce cellulite by stimulating blood circulation to break down build ups of fat. It can also help to remove impurities, exfoliate the skin and tone muscles by maintaining the elasticity of muscle fibres.
Your treatment will last approximately 30 minutes. Your legs will be massaged vigorously using a special Ayurvedic oil which is specific to your dosha type, followed by a Herbal Slimming Powder which contains a special mixture of herbs to help assist in the removal of subcutaneous fat.
Please wear old underwear and loose fitting skirt or trousers as traces of oil or powder may transfer onto materials.
A course of treatments is recommended to see noticibale improvments in the tone of your skin. The amount of treatments needed would vary dependent on the amount and severity of cellulite, but most people would notice some improvement after approximately 8 treatments. The treatments are more effective if they are taken close together, so I would recommend a minimum of 3-4 treatments a week.
I do not claim to cure Cellulite.
What is Cellulite?
Cellulite is the name of a skin condition that affects approximately 90% of women and results in the dimpling or bumpy appearance of the thighs and buttocks.
What Causes Cellulite?
The actual cause of cellulite is unknown. Some doctors and medical professionals believe that diet and stress may contribute to cellulite, but these theories have never been proven. The condition is not caused by weight gain or only found on heavy women.
Cellulite results from a breakdown in the fibres that hold muscles to skin. When this happens subcutaneous fat is allowed to protrude through the fibres and affect the appearance of the skin. When this fat pokes through into the dermis (skin) bumps appear and an “orange peel” effect is noticeable.
Who Gets Cellulite?
Over nine tenths of the female population eventually develops cellulite and it is just as common in skinny women as it is in overweight ones. It is also found in women who are very physically fit, just as it is found in women who get very little to no physical exercise.
The only individuals that are safe from this skin condition are men. This is because the fibre bands that connect the skin to muscle in men are criss-crossed and denser than those found in women. With a more structurally sound fibre make-up fat is unable to protrude through to the surface of the skin.
How is Cellulite Treated?
Currently there is no cure for cellulite. However, many products and theories exist for the treatment of cellulite. The goal of these treatments is the improvement in the appearance of the cellulite and the skin it affects, not the reduction or removal of the cellulite altogether.
Although weight loss will not eliminate the appearance of cellulite research has shown that a healthy diet rich in nutrients can help reduce the dimpling effect that cellulite has on the skin. The same is true for exercise. While the exercise won’t cure the condition it can build up the muscles and tissue that surround it and reduce how noticeable the cellulite is.
A popular cellulite treatment is massage of the affected area to target the cellulite or protruding fat deposits in hope of breaking them up and allowing them to reabsorb back into the body. It may not completely get rid of cellulite, but some women may notice improvement in the appearance of the skin.
