About Sports Massage
There is evidence to suggest that appropriately applied Sports Massage can reduce pain. It is also thought to improve the flexibility of muscles, tendons and ligaments, increase blood circulation to the areas worked and assist with the drainage of excess fluid and waste products. It may also increase the activity in muscle cells, reduce the tone of “tight” muscles and create a feeling of relaxation.
Sports massage techniques are usually applied directly to the skin in a manner designed to effect changes to the muscles, tendons and ligaments which are injured or aching. With many techniques a lotion is used to prevent drag on the skin, but some can be applied through clothing or a towel.
What can this mean for you?
Fulfil your sporting potential! If you are an athlete
- Regular “maintenance” treatment can keep your muscles flexible, giving you greater freedom of movement and improved sporting performance. The tight feeling associated with training and competing can be alleviated.
- If you notice any discomfort, pain or a slower recovery than usual, an assessment and treatment can identify potential problems before they cause an injury. This can be so beneficial, as once an injury has occurred a degree of rest from your sport is usually required.
- If you suffer an injury, either in competition or through overuse, Sports Massage can help promote an effective recovery. At each stage of the healing process Sports Massage, along with an individualised exercise programme, can contribute to creating an optimum environment for repair, encourage scar tissue to align and conform to the surrounding tissues and help restore normal muscle tone and flexibility. A graded process of return to sporting activity can help avoid a recurrence of the injury.
Find relief from muscular pain and tension!
Sports Massage can be applied to prevent and treat injuries associated with gardening, manual work, driving and other physical activity in the same way as for the athlete.
Muscular back, neck and shoulder pain, with related problems such as sciatica, can be significantly relieved through a programme of Sports Massage and exercise.
Stress related tension can be eased, helping to interrupt an unhealthy cycle of symptoms which can arise when under pressure.
Promote well being and relaxation!
Treat yourself to a treatment that will help you feel more relaxed mentally and physically. Looking after yourself can help you better manage other demands on your time and resources.
Most of us could benefit from Sports Massage as a positive way of maintaining health and promoting healing.
