Acupuncture in the community
The aim of Stroud Community Acupuncture is to make acupuncture affordable and accessible to all, no matter what their income, by treating people in a multi-bed environment. Traditionally in the UK, acupuncture is carried out by one practitioner treating one person at a time and charging anywhere from £40 to £60 per treatment. This can exclude people who cannot afford this. At Stroud Community Acupuncture, more than one person can be treated at once. By treating several people together in the same communal space, treatment costs can be significantly reduced, while still being able to maintain the costs of running the clinic. The benefit of having treatment at Stroud Community Acupuncture is that people can afford as much acupuncture as they need to get well and stay well.
Acupuncture is suitable for all ages, including babies and children and is fantastic for maintaining the health and well being of the whole family.
What happens during a treatment?
At Stroud Community Acupuncture, treatment couches are divided by partitions to preserve your privacy. On your first visit you’ll be asked to fill out a health history questionnaire. The practitioner may ask you for more information regarding some of your answers. You’ll then be shown to a treatment couch, where the practitioner will look at your tongue and take your pulse. A diagnosis can then be made, and a treatment plan formulated. During the consultation and treatment, please remember to talk quietly so as not to disturb other people having treatment.
There is generally no need to undress for treatment, as the most frequently used points are below the knees and elbows. For this reason it is best to wear loose or baggy clothing which can easily be rolled up above the knees and elbows. However, should the need arise to use points above your knees or elbows, or on your back or stomach, blankets are used to keep you warm and covered at all times. Once the needles are inserted it takes about 20-45 minutes for them to work their magic. During this time it’s best to just relax into the treatment as deeply as possible. While you’re relaxing the practitioner is free to start treating someone else, although they will check back on you regularly throughout your treatment, and will be close at hand should you need them.
How many treatments will I need?
Acupuncture, like all medicine, often requires a course of treatment in order to be effective; one treatment often isn’t enough to create a lasting change to a person’s symptoms. If you only have a few treatments, or your treatments are too infrequent, the acupuncture may not build up the momentum to give you the healing you seek. Many people experience a significant change in their symptoms after about ten treatments. Many people experience a significant change in their symptoms within ten treatments. However, conditions which are serious or chronic may be stubborn, and therefore need more treatment over a longer period of time. Often the main obstacle preventing people from committing to enough treatments to get themselves better, and stay better is money. Stroud Community Acupuncture offers treatments from £10 to £35 making acupuncture an affordable medicine.
How does acupuncture work?
According to Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body’s life force energy, known as qi, moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of channels beneath the skin, known as meridians. The flow of qi can be disturbed by any number of factors. These include emotional states such as anxiety, anger, or grief, as well as poor nutrition, hereditary factors, infections or trauma. When qi is unbalanced, illness may result. Acupuncture works to maintain the body’s equilibrium by focusing on all aspects of wellbeing; physical, mental, and emotional.
The aim of acupuncture is to stimulate the body’s own healing response and restore its natural balance through the insertion of ultra-fine needles at chosen points along the meridians. Treatment is aimed at the root of your
condition, as well as at your symptoms. This approach can lead to a more permanent resolution of your problems.
An increasing weight of evidence from Western scientific research is demonstrating the effectiveness of acupuncture for treating a wide variety of conditions. From a biomedical viewpoint, acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system, influencing the production of the body's communication substances - hormones and neurotransmitters. The resulting biochemical changes activate the body's self-regulating homeostatic systems, stimulating its natural healing abilities and promoting physical and emotional well-beingWhether you have acupuncture or massage depends on your condition and what you are looking for. I can provide acupuncture, or massage separately. I can also combine them in one treatment, which for some conditions can bring about faster relief from symptoms.

Testimonials
I have been having treatment with Steve for over a year now and would not hesitate to recommend him to any of my friends or family. My job puts a lot of strain on my body and to be honest I would really struggle to perform to my best ability without seeing Steve for massage and acupuncture treatments.
Darrin Mooney of Primal Scream
My acupuncture sessions with Steve have been very effective in helping me overcome a long-term sleeping disorder. They left me feeling significantly more relaxed and balanced, and enabled me to sleep better and for longer. This, in turn, has improved my overall mental and physical health quite significantly with improved mood, concentration and energy levels. I would highly recommend Steve to anyone with similar problems i.e. night time anxiety, difficulty falling and staying asleep ...and the fatigue and frustration it causes- it has had an extremely positive result for me, my only regret being that I didn’t have the treatment sooner.

I have been a client of Steve Crowley for about two years during which I see him approximately once a fortnight. I have found that his massage technique is always first class and extremely beneficial. He applies his extensive knowledge of the human anatomy to great advantage when dealing with specific problematic areas. I think you will be hard-pressed to find somebody as good as him, for his excellent work and pleasant disposition.
Peter
After many years of lower back pain, the relief I experienced following acupuncture treatment with Steve was immense. Two years later, following regular treatment, I continue to be pain free and never fail to be impressed by Steve’s dedication and competence. I always feel that Steve’s primary intent is the the improvement of the patients’ health. In this endeavour I can personally testify that he is succeeding! So if you are considering trying acupuncture, maybe for the first time, then I would urge you to do so. With Steve as your acupuncturist the pain of your ailment will reduce and overall your health will improve.
Stuart, a 60 year old male
I first went to see Steve because several months after having hip replacements I was still very stiff and uncomfortable, but it took only a few massage sessions for the pain and stiffness to completely disappear and this continues now without any further treatment. However, at the first session I learnt that Steve also performed acupuncture and that the insomnia which I had suffered for several years could be treated this way. I was in no way sure that acupuncture would work but after only a few sessions I found sleeping much easier and I now can sleep well and completely without the medication I had previously had to take. Steve is a true professional. He loves his work and for me he has made a huge improvement to my quality of life. I can recommend him unreservedly.

Steve is the real deal when it comes to traditional acupuncture. He really opened my mind up to it's powerful healing effects. I thought I'd had proper acupuncture treatments before meeting Steve..but I was wrong!
Austin
I have had severe pain for most of my life, hospitals have been unhelpful in pain control. Meeting Steve has changed my life. He is a good listener, helps in everyway he can and if possible will the go extra mile. Steve is honest and has treated me for more than two years changing my life from being hell to being tolerable and letting me have some social life which I had lost. I liked the way Steve treated me as an individual and believed what I told him, a feeling I did not receive from the hospital. If you feel at the end of your tether, try seeing Steve you will not regret it.
