What is Homeopathy?
Your questions answered:
• Who can use homeopathy? — Anyone can benefit from homeopathy. It is also safe to use for babies, children and pregnant/breastfeeding women under the supervision of an appropriately qualified practitioner.
• What can it treat? - A wide range of conditions, recent or longstanding. These could include, for example:
o acute problems (e.g. coughs, ear infections, sore throats) or
o chronic conditions (e.g. allergies, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, asthma, back pain, recurrent cystitis, irritable bowel syndrome, skin complaints, menstrual and menopausal symptoms, sports injuries)
• Is it safe? — Yes. Two hundred years of practice, research and trials have proved the safety of this gentle system of medicine for both people and animals. Unlike some conventional drugs, homeopathic medicines are non-addictive and have no dangerous side-effects.
• What is homeopathic medicine? - The treatments are derived mainly from natural sources including plants and minerals. They are prepared in licensed laboratories under strict control and can be given in tablet, granule or liquid form.
• Are the homeopathic medicines the same as herbal remedies? — No. The plant sources may be similar but a significant difference is in their preparation. Homeopathic medicines are made from a very small amount of the active ingredient using a process of dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking). As a result it is possible to take homeopathic treatment alongside conventional medicine without fear of drug interaction unlike some herbal remedies.
• What does treatment involve? - The appropriate medicine is carefully selected based on a detailed consultation with emphasis on the individual’s history, physical, and emotional symptoms.
• What if! am receiving treatment from my doctor? — Homeopathy works well alongside conventional medicine. Being a medical doctor, trained in homeopathy I am able to advise when to use either conventional or homeopathic treatment or a combination of the two. At all times, the health and safety of the patient is paramount.
• How does it work? - By stimulating the body’s own ability to heal itself. It works on the principle of using like to cure like. In other words, it treats an illness with medicine made from a substance that would produce similar symptoms in a healthy person.
For example, an onion can cause streaming eyes and a runny nose. A homeopathic medicine derived from onions (allium cepa) can be successful in alleviating these symptoms in say someone suffering from hayfever.
