Welcome to the Norfolk Fei-Yan Taiji & Qigong School

The ancient Chinese skills of Taiji (tai chi), Qigong & Kung Fu are justly famous for promoting health, relaxation, serenity, balance, co-ordination, confidence and inner energy. The Norfolk Fei-Yan Taiji & Qigong School is committed to teaching these wonderful skills iin a way that makes them accessible - and enjoyable - to all.

We do our best to combine an exceptionally high level of teaching with an equally high level of compassion and humanity. If you value sincerity, patience and laughter you’ll find our classes a very enjoyable experience. We don’t rush through exercises and routines and tick them off our list in the quest for some imagined perfection but constantly revisit them to renew their acquaintance and refresh our understanding and interpretation of them. We learn and grow together.

Elaine Tattersall teaches in Aylsham, Holt, Coltishall, Burgh-next-Aylsham and North Walsham. She warmly invites you to come and watch a class or join in at any time.

Elaine Tattersall

Elaine Tattersall has a lifelong interest in the way the human body - and mind - works. She has studied biology and psychology and is a qualified reflexology, psych-k & shiatsu practitioner. Her desire to empower people and help them improve and maintain their own health rather than seek external therapies and quick-fixes led her to study the Chinese internal arts of Taijiquan (tai chi) and Qigong (chi kung).

She began her training in earnest with Julian Wilde in 1992 and eventually became a trustworthy and valued assistant trainer. She joined the worldwide Tse Qigong Centre in the mid-90's and was a qualified Dayan Gong (Wild Goose) teacher for over a decade.

Her Sifu's (teacher) decision to open up his own style of Qigong to the world prompted her to follow suit and she now teaches the Fei-Yan (Flying Swallow) Qigong and Kung Fu as well as the Chen style of Taiji.

Taijiquan (tai chi)

Taijiquan (tai chi chuan) translates as yang and yin boxing, a name which reveals its martial origins. It's the most well known of all the Chinese internal arts, justly famous for enhancing health, relaxation and vitality.

Many tai chi players in the modern world are more interested in its numerous health enhancing characteristics than self defence, which is understandable. But tai chi self defence, which develops from tui shao (push hands) practice, when taught as partner work in a safe and friendly environment, can be great fun and very relaxing and should form an integral part of Taiji training.

Tai chi originated in Chenjiagou, Heibei Province at the end of the Ming Dynasty. The Chen style of taiji features a unique spiralling energy known as chan si, silk reeling. Beginners forms are stately and graceful, very enjoyable to learn and practice. More advanced students practice weapons routines and the pao choi (cannon fist). All forms, basic or advanced, concentrate on relaxation, correct posture, whole body integration and a good flow of energy.

It's important to recognise the various stages of learning tai chi:

1. Learn the moves.
2. Get more detail - better posture, more relaxation, correct energy.
3. Work on the flow. This sequence cannot be skipped over or tampered with!

Elaine Tattersall has studied Chen Taiji with Julian Wilde for fifteen years
and with Grandmaster Chen Xiao Wang, the head of the Chen family, on many occasions.

Also on offer is the 24 Step or 24 Posture style of Tai Chi, regarded in China as especially suitable for beginners & the elderly. Easy to learn and perform, it still offers many of the benefits associated with regular tai chi practice, such as enhanced relaxation, wellbeing, balance, suppleness & co-ordination.

Qigong (chi kung)

All around us we can see the natural world in movement – willow trees rippling in the breeze, gulls swooping from the sky, cats stretching in the sun. Qigong formalises these movements and combines them with breathing, posture and alignment of acupuncture points to create wonderful health-enhancing routines and single exercises. Much of what we do as humans is qigong too – if our eyes are tired we rub them, if we burn our fingers we suck them or wave them in the air. Our bodies know what to do. Qigong enables us to consciously access this wisdom.

Qigong, pronounced chee kung, means energy exercise, working with our natural internal energy or life force. Though not as well known in the West as tai chi, qigong is second to none for preserving and promoting health, relaxation, suppleness, balance and co-ordination for men & women of all ages. Qigong is fun to learn and practice and very beautiful to watch.

Elaine's Sifu Julian Wilde created the Fei-Yan Qigong (Flying Swallow Qigong) system from his 25 year long experience of internal skills, which includes the Wild Goose system, the Taiji Qigong, the Eight Silk Brocade exercises, the Five Animal Frolics and many others. His sincere aim is to empower every individual to maintain their own good health rather than relying on external or artificial props. Fei-Yan forms such as the Heaven and Earth, the Green Willow and the Assembly of Birds forms embody and promote this aspiration.

In Chinese mythology the swallow represents love, happiness, good fortune and the end of stagnation and winter.

Kung Fu

When we think of Kung Fu we often think of those amazing Shaolin monks performing flying kicks, landing in the splits and breaking bricks on their heads! But there's a lot more to Kung Fu than that. First and foremost a really good style should be accessible to all, old and young alike - all the moves should be adaptable to suit all ages and ability levels. Secondly, health is vital - it's no good practicing something that's going to damage you.

Shaolin Kung Fu (kung fu means skill won through hard work) began when Bodhidharma, a visiting master from India, taught the monks of the Shaolin Temple some health enhancing exercises in order to balance their sedentary and introspective lifestyle. The self defence aspect developed much later.

Fei-Yan Chuan is based firmly on Shaolin principles and though it may be used effectively for self defence its primary purpose is to promote and maintain suppleness, agility, mobile joints, breathing, good posture and stamina.

Fei-Yan Chuan may be practiced by men & women of all ages, fit or not-quite-so fit!

The various bare hand and weapons routines are great fun to learn and perform.
