ScarWork
Integrating Scar tissue into the underlying fascial web, to improve the condition of a scar and surrounding tissues.
A scar is more than just a mark on the surface of the skin.....
ScarWork will help to reconnect and promote healing on the scars' surface, and reduce adhesions in the underlying tissues.
What happens when a scar forms?
Scar formation is a natural process of wound healing. Scar tissue contains more fibrous tissue and collagen deposits than normal skin, making it structurally and functionally different. There may have been nerve damage from the injury or surgery, causing numbness or sensitivity in the area. Imagine a 'pull' in a jumper......this will distort the area around it. Now imagine it has a hole- if you gather up the edges and sew it up (like a scar), the look of it would be pulled and puckered, and you'd probably not wear it again!
How will ScarWork affect a scar?
ScarWork is done primarily to improve feeling and functionality in the scar and surrounding tissues. It will promote better movement between layers of skin, fascia (connective-tissue) and muscle.
Treatment stimulates the circulation, lymphatic and nervous systems, to encourage renewed healing, and promote tissue health.
Visually, cosmetic changes can occur. Scars often appear smaller, lighter and less prominent, but the emphasis is on the underlying tissue changes. The work starts with the surface layers and moves deeper into fascial tissue under the scar.
ScarWork can help resolve nerve impairment such as numbness, pain or sensitivity.
Changes that occur to the scar and nerve function should be permanent. Tightness in surrounding tissues is reduced, and muscle function in the area can be improved. Knots and tight 'ropey' scars are softened and loosened, ridges and holes can be minimised. Multiple treatments may be needed to gain the most benefit, and response to treatment will vary for each individual.
Will it hurt?
ScarWork is not like traditional scar massage. It is rarely painful, even for new scars. Using a variety of specially developed movements, qualified practitioners will work on and around the scar. Although seemingly effortless, treatments can instigate whole body shifts where patterns of dysfunction caused by old or new injuries, are released.
Which scars can be treated?
All kinds of scars from very old to newly healed (once you have been discharged by your doctor) can be treated using ScarWork. They could be the result of an accident, operation or cosmetic surgery, such as:
Knee replacement
Hip replacement
Skin grafts
Facial scarring
Foot surgery
Abdominal surgery
Appendix removal
Gaul bladder removal
Cesarian section
Hysterectomy
Breast surgery
Spinal surgery
Achilles tendon surgery
Childhood injury
Tummy tuck surgery
Burns
And many more…
The ScarWork Journey:
ScarWork was developed by Sharon Wheeler of Seattle, United States.
At the age of 23, Sharon Wheeler trained with Dr Ida P. Ralph, the founder of Structural Integration also known as Rolfing.
Sharon discovered that she was able to change and promote healing in scars while working as a therapist. She has spent over 40 years developing her techniques, and still continues to treat clients, as well as running a training program for experienced physical therapists.

Sharon works together with Jan Trewartha, who is the only accredited ScarWork trainer covering UK and Europe. Jan coordinates a professional qualification through Body in Harmony training to ensure ScarWork standards and practices are maintained.
Her website includes a database of ScarWork practitioners.

Testimony:
"I have had breast cancer three times.
Once in 1994,when I had a lumpectomy, and a vast amount of radiotherapy treatment.
Twelve years later in 2006,I had a mastectomy.
I am now recovering from chemotherapy treatment after a diagnosis in July 2014,when I had lymphoedema in my arm of the mastectomy side and cancer cells in a lymph node in my neck.
A neighbour told me of Megan, who was interested in working with scar tissue
I arrived to see Megan, little knowing her skills.
I felt an instant warmth, which helped me feel comfortable showing her my mastectomy scar.
The scar was very bruised and stuck to my rib cage and there was no feeling or sensation.
It was difficult for me to stretch and raise my arm.
I have had three sessions with Megan. She gently massages the scar. The difference already is remarkable.
There is plumpness and sensation around the scar, and the bruising has disappeared.
I can lift my arm freely.
I can hardly absorb what has happened.
I am wearing lower necklines again, and I was greatly touched at my last session when she gave me a filled crocheted breast
shape,making it lighter to wear.
I have recommended a friend who has also had a mastectomy, and after one treatment, she told me that her scar already
feels more comfortable, commenting that the NHS should be doing such massage, and that she has arranged another appointment with Megan.
I will always be grateful to Megan for giving me back my confidence as a woman and retrieving a part of myself from which
I had disconnected.
Megan is passionate about her work and I feel privileged to be part of it.
