Wainwright Therapy Centre
A Bit of History
The building from which the centre operates dates from around 1870. It was a typical Victorian residence until the mid 1940s when Mrs Margaret Brougham started the first Osteopathic practice.
In 1950, 32 year-old Osteopath David Wainwright established the present practice with the help of his wife Elizabeth Joy.
David enjoyed what he calls “more than 50 glorious years as an Osteopath” and devoted himself to continual patient care, providing an exemplary and outstanding service to his profession. He was given the honour of being President of the Osteopathic Association of Great Britain in the 1970s.
He and his generation are highly recognised and greatly admired by today’s practising Osteopaths for having nurtured the profession from its beginnings to its present success.
The Centre Today
WTC is now a multi-practice establishment with dedicated practitioners promoting health and well-being, treating the whole person and their individual needs.
It is now run and managed by David’s daughter Jan Birch who is in partnership with her brother Colin Wainwright who worked here as an Osteopath for 36 years.
With the help of 2 dedicated receptionists, Maureen and Beverley, we aim to provide a high standard of care to the South Yorkshire community.

What does Osteopathy treat?
Osteopaths can treat a very wide range of complaints including:
- back pain
- joint problems
- headaches
- Sciatica
- Sinusitis
- work strain
- frozen shoulder
- trapped nerves
- whiplash injury
- posture problems
- Arthritis
- stiffness and neck tension
- sports injuries
Osteopaths can do a great deal to alleviate back pain. Most back pain is due to mechanical disturbances of the spine as well as postural strain and joint or disc problems. For headaches, the Osteopath can alleviate pain by relieving stiffness and tension in the neck. Patients suffering from the less acute stages of arthritis can be helped by the Osteopath reducing pain and stiffness.
Osteopaths can treat many conditions related to the workplace whether from sitting at a computer terminal all day or strain from heavy work. They can give remedial advice and preventative exercises.
