Namaste and Welcome to Carley Oates yoga website.

I am an independent BWY (British Wheel of Yoga) teacher based in North Somerset. I teach weekly hatha yoga classes (during school term time times) in Nailsea and Wrington, pregnancy yoga, yoga for Mum's & babies together, yoga for children within schools and pre-school settings, yoga workshops throughout the country and yoga in the workplace. I do not subscribe to any particular 'school' of yoga, which allows me the freedom to meet the needs of each yoga student.

If this website doesn't give you all the details you need, please contact me for further information.

Namaste is a Sanskrit word used as a form of greeting in India and Tibet, it can be translated as:

I honour the place in you in which the entire universe dwells. I honour the place in you which is of love, truth, light and peace. When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, we are one.
Om Shanti

About the Teacher - Carley Oates.

What is a teacher?....it isn’t someone who teaches something, but someone who inspires the student to give of her best in order to discover what she already knows.’ Paulo Coelho

I first encountered yoga when I was pregnant with my first child; I found yoga to be an effective and gentle way to maintain a healthy environment for my unborn baby and myself. I soon discovered that yoga is so much more than a method of exercise. With over a decade of practice and study, I have come to understand that yoga is a way of getting to know body, mind and the energy (prana) which is interwoven through the very fabric of existence. Yoga supports me in acknowledging strengths and weaknesses and observing how I can help myself through the challenges I meet in everyday life. Yoga also beautifully reveals the spirit which connects us all. I have been lucky to meet some wonderfully inspiring teachers and I honour them and their teachers, for enabling the vibrant current of yoga to flow.

Qualifications and Training

Completing a combined honours degree in Human Biology and Applied Psychology in 1995 sustained my desire to understand the body and mind and how they might interact to influence our state of health. During my formal studies I suspected that the western scientific viewpoint might not be providing us with the whole story and I began to investigate more esoteric subjects. While at University I took courses in Buddhist meditation, amongst others and my university final dissertations focussed on complementary therapy. From then on my interest in holistic health grew. Then I discovered yoga, and I have no doubt that this subject is worthy of a lifetime of exploration.

I completed the 3-year British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) Teaching Diploma in June 2008. The BWY provide the most comprehensive and recognised yoga teacher training courses in the UK. I am committed to continuous professional development regulated by the BWY.

My post-diploma training in pregnancy yoga was provided by Sitaram Partnership. This training is equivalent to the BWY Post-Diploma Module for yoga in pregnancy.

My initial training was directed by Derek Thorne who continues to guide me through the profound teachings of jnana yoga. As a friend of the YogaLiving Community Ashram, my personal yoga practice is supported by association with regular satsang and active participation in the creative energy of YogaLiving.

I have been teaching general hatha yoga classes in my community since 2006 and love every minute of it!

Yoga Classes with Carley

In a society that almost demands life at double time; speed and addictions numb us to our own experience. In such a society it is almost impossible to settle into our bodies or stay connected with our hearts, let alone connect with one another or the earth where we live.’ Jack Kornfield

The general yoga classes which I lead, are based on Hatha Yoga and last 1.5 hours (see class schedule). Each class typically contains warm-up/limbering/core strength exercises, Yoga postures (Asana), breathing/energy work (Pranayama) and finishes with relaxation and sometimes meditation depending on the class. There is always space within the class for explanation and discussion as queries arise. My lessons are designed to suit a range of ability so they can be enjoyed by all adults, whether they are beginners or experienced Yoga practitioners.

For information on other types of classes please see Special Classes

Remember

  • Avoid eating for about an hour before practicing yoga. Wait for at least 2 hours if you have had a heavy meal.

  • Yoga postures are practiced with bare feet.

  • Wear comfortable clothing; anything loose or stretchy is ideal. An extra layer and socks are recommended during relaxation at the end of a class. You will cool down more than you may expect, so always make sure that you will be warm and comfortable during relaxation.

  • Yoga is not a competitive sport. Avoid straining during postures and breathing practices. Try not to compare yourself with others, there will always be those better and those worse than you, Yoga can help us to discover our strengths and weaknesses. I will offer advice during classes about safe practice, but you must work responsibly and within your limits.

  • Yoga should engage your body as well as your mind, it can be an opportunity for you to give mundane thoughts less attention, and be totally present in the practice. Hatha yoga aims to bring mind and body together in harmonious union.

What to bring with you:
  • Non-slip Yoga mat (I have some which you can borrow, and some for sale.)

  • Blanket – to provide padding in some postures and warmth during relaxation

  • Block/small cushion – provides support in some postures (I always bring blocks to class)

  • Payment – If you know you are likely to attend more or less the whole term of lessons, it is advantageous to pay for the whole term on the first week and receive a discount on the overall cost. For example, a 6-week term will cost £36 (£6 per lesson) or £30 concessions. If you pay on a week by week basis, the cost is £7 per lesson or £6 concessions. So by paying for the full term gets you a free lesson!

  • A Smile – having an attitude of ‘kind effort’ may help you enjoy your yoga practice more.
