Welcome to Yoga Ground

Next 6 week class series starts on Thursday 12th January 2012. See http://www.yogaground.com/lessons.php for details.

In yoga you study yourself through movement – that is through the postures or asanas as they are called. You also study yourself through meditation and breathing. Yoga has a long tradition of helping people transform their lives by providing them with tools to stay calm and centred even in difficult or busy times.

You do not need to be super slim, flexible or super fit in order to do yoga. You just need to be willing to learn.

Here at Yoga Ground the focus is on helping to improve the quality of the movements we make in every day life. We want you to feel better running for a bus, reaching up to put the coffee jar back on the top shelf as well as enjoying the asanas offered in the class room setting.

About Kevin Saunders

I've been studying body work of different kinds since 1984. I've taught yoga since 2008 and I'm a British Wheel of Yoga teacher.

When I graduated from University College London with an Economics degree, I didn't know what to do but I did know that it wouldn't involve accounting (the profession of choice for my fellow graduates). As I was keen on guitar playing, I became a classical guitar teacher and performer. A college friend suggested that I take up the Alexander technique to help with my music and I studied the technique privately with a number of teachers including Patrick MacDonald, Misha Magidov and Hilary King

I've been studying yoga off and on since 1997. I started practicing Okido yoga, a Japanese form of yoga. My first yoga teachers, Tomoko Mori and her husband were very influential in my first 8 years of practice. In the last 2 years I've branched out and had lessons with other teachers.

One to one lessons

Have you wondered why your yoga practice sometimes becomes a bit bogged down? In a class, no matter how good the teacher, you are getting a generic solution.

In a one to one lesson, you can focus on the asanas and attitudes which are causing you problems. I can give you solutions which are unique to you and help you develop a practice plan which let you be more in control of your practice.

The benefits for you can be:

  • Improved levels of fitness and flexibility.
  • Better sleeping patterns.
  • An improvement in your ability to calm your mind.
  • Less of those daily aches and pains.

  • Lessons are usually an hour long and are held at my home in Finsbury Park (see contact me for exact address). I can also visit you in your home.

The format of each lesson varies according what is suitable and necessary for a particular student and according to their particular preferences, but it might include some of the following elements.

  • Tune into mind/body /feeling
  • Joint stabilisation and warm up exercises
  • A set of custom asanas (yoga poses) which will generally be in the following order
      o Standing
      o Lying
      o Inversions
      o Backbends

  • Pranayama (Breathing exercises)
  • Meditation

You will need to wear loose comfortable clothing, I suggest normal work out gear such as jogging pants and t shirt.
