Welcome to Yoga in Somerset
A yoga pose is more than a physical exercise. It is a gesture that expresses a universal meaning. In working with the poses, we stretch and stregthen the body, we calm and focus the mind, and we develop a creative ability to form and shape the poses in an artistic way.
Weekly yoga classes are held in Taunton, Wellington and Milverton.

Yoga Teacher Training
Our yoga teacher training course is based on the ‘New Yoga Will’ founded by Heinz Grill. In this new approach we study certain natural principles and give these principles expression in the yoga poses. This way of practice helps us to develop new strengths which we can integrate into our lives in our own unique way.
The course will enable you to develop a real and deep understanding of the yoga poses and chakras in their inner meanings. You will learn how to shape the poses out of a clear, creative consciousness giving them more depth and expression.
The course consists of 22 monthly weekend workshops in Somerset with Karen Patterson, and one long weekend per year in Italy with Heinz Grill. The course lasts two years and is made up of seven modules lasting 3 months each. To complete each module you need to attend the three weekends which make up that module and complete a short written assignment. A yoga teaching certificate accredited by the Independent Yoga Network will be issued following completion of 7 modules, 2 additional assignments and assessed teaching practice.
Dates of next course
The next two year yoga teacher training course is planned to begin in April 2019.An essential 6 week foundation course must be attended beforehand. The next one will start on 8th April 2018. To find out more or register your interest please ring 01823 400122 or email Karen.
About Karen
British Wheel of Yoga teaching diploma
State Registered dietitian
I have been teaching yoga since 1992. My initial love for the physical movement with its simultaneous mental calmness is now evolving into an understanding that yoga can be a profound tool for helping each individual develop their own creative potential. My wish is to make it possible for more and more people to develop a calm ability to shape their actions out of clear, free thoughts.
My biggest influence has been the work of the spiritual teacher Heinz Grill (http://www.en.heinz-grill.de/). Experience of many other styles of yoga and other disciplines such as Pilates and Alexander technique have also informed my teaching. I hold a British Wheel of Yoga teaching diploma.
After 17 years working as a state registered dietitian I gave up NHS employment in 2005 and I now run vegetarian cookery workshops that explore the spiritual meaning of food and the relationship we develop to it as well as scientific nutritional knowledge.
My life long interest in singing has led me to become musical director of Taunton Ladies Chorus. I am continuing to explore how in singing we can use our creative ability to give shape.

Aims
This yoga intensive course consists of 6 morning workshops over a four month period. It is designed to help you
- improve your yoga practice
- develop the confidence and self discipline to practise at home
- develop a greater sense of self-empowerment for life through yoga practice
Course content
On the course we work thoroughly with a selection poses, breaking them down into their individual components to understand how they work physically and also what personal strengths are associated with them.
You will receive a lot of individual attention to help you overcome any difficulties and improve your practice.
Short practice cycles are given after each session for you to practice at home in the intervening periods. During the workshops we also discuss ways of finding time to build regular yoga practice into your life.
On this course we work with the booklet “A New Yoga Will – A cycle of exercises to promote individual strength” by Heinz Grill. This booklet contains many pictures and detailed explanations regarding the physical practice of the yoga exercises as well as the personal strengths they can help us develop.
Yoga and self-empowerment
The physical practice of yoga goes hand in hand with the development of certain inner strengths. We could say that it is “character building”. More specifically, you
- develop mental concentration by working to mentally picture the poses you practise
- develop an artistic sensitivity by feeling the forms of the poses as you give them a graceful shape
- increase will-power and stamina by setting yourself physical challenges
As these inner strengths develop, they empower you to take hold of your own life and shape it your own individual way.
Dates of the next yoga intensive course
The workshops will be held at three weekly intervals on Sunday mornings from 9 am to 1 pm on the following dates:
8th April
29th April

10th June
1st July
15th July
