A cough occurs when the air passages need to be cleared, prompting a sudden expulsion of air from the lungs. A cough may be a symptom of respiratory infection, including colds, flues, bronchitis, and pneumonia. The medical term for a sore throat is pharyngitis and it is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. A cough may be treated with medication, humidifiers, homoeopathy, herbal remedies, fluid therapy, nutritional supplements and acupuncture.
