Premature labour is classified as a labour which occurs prior to the 37th week of pregnancy. There are a number of causes which bring about premature labour and can happen to any woman. Around 40% of premature labours have unknown causes. Premature labour is characterized by any combination of frequent contractions, a watery discharge from the vagina, period pain like cramping, dull pain in the back, a feeling of pressure on the pelvis, stomach cramps or signs of blood from the vagina. Medication, preparing the baby, preparing the baby for birth, bed rest and dehydration are all options which can assist during a premature labour.
